Chapter 2
Sitting on the edge of the bed I looked back at Alex’s naked body. I let my eyes rake over the curve in his smooth back all the way up to his peaceful face, his pink lips open just a little and his peroxide blonde hair which had been perfectly quaffed before was now in a limp mess plastered to his pale forehead. With a small smile to myself I turned away and pulled on my boots and my leather jacket before throwing my bag over my shoulder and walking through the front door as quietly as I could.
With a smile plastered on my face I slid my sunglasses over my eyes and looked up at the sky, letting the warmth of the sun warm me for a second enjoying the moment. When the moment passed I found that I was still smiling as I made my way to the reception area, placing my bag on the ground I was met by the pleasant smile of the pretty girl at the counter.
“Hello there” she smiled brightly as she twirled her strawberry blonde hair with her fingers “checking out, Mr Smith?”
“Yes please” I smiled back.
“Sorted things out with your wife I presume? Cash or card?” she said as she typed something into the computer.
“Something like that. Cash please” I smiled “a friend of mine is still in the room so I think he’d appreciated it if you let him sleep” I handed over the money and gave her a little extra.
“Of course sir! I hope you had a nice stay.”
“The best,” I leaned over the desk and plucked a pen out of the pen holder and picked up a brochure from the stand “could you make sure my friend gets this?”
“Of course” she smiled as I scribbled a quick note ‘thanks for last night XX’ “oh I almost forgot!” the girl turned away and rummaged through a pile of paper on her desk “a man came in early this morning and asked if I would give you this” she handed me a white envelope with my agent number 2406 written on it, in return I handed her the folded brochure and thanked her.
With one final smile I pocketed the envelope and turned on my heel, leaving the building. Quickly I walked across the parking Lott and jumped onto my motor bike. With a swift kick I started her up and she roared to life between my legs and I sped off to find a quiet place to get breakfast and read the letter.
Finally I came to a quaint diner just on the outskirts of town; I chose a booth in the back of the diner and ordered some coffee. I waited for the waitress to pour the coffee and leave before I pulled the envelope out of my pocket. Slipping my finger under the flap I ripped it open and pulled out the piece of paper. It read:
Agent 2406 report to The Office by 10:00 pm tomorrow morning.
And that was it, no other explanation. There was no signature at the bottom, nothing. With one last sip of my coffee I threw down some money and left the diner, if I wanted to be at The Office in time I couldn’t waste any more time than I have already. I hopped on my bike and set off towards The Office.
The road there was long and dusty so I didn’t want to stop but my bike decided to break down on me, great, I thought as I looked around the empty road and tinkered with the engine a little but there was no use, I needed to take it to a garage. I sighed and pulled it along the road until I finally got to a town called Greenville, I found a small parking Lott and parked up before I made my way to the bus station where, luckily, I caught a bus straight away. After that I took 4 more busses and by the time I’d arrived the sun had been up for hours and with a quick glance at my watch I saw that I had no time to clean all the dust and dirt off myself before I went to The Office so I hitched my bag a little higher on my shoulder and began my long walk.
