When Nyrie awoke again, she felt a sense of emptiness deep down inside her. A darkness somewhere inside of her like a gaping hole fractured a piece of her soul. There was a part of her that she refused to acknowledge before, but now it had been ripped away it was hard to ignore how hollow she felt.

Nyrie remained lying in her large, comfortable bed, surrounded by many soft, fluffy pillows with her eyes closed, savouring the peace and quiet. With her head completely clear, her body not hurting from any physical pain anymore she just lay completely still.

She had no will or motivation to move anyway.

Maybe she was too broken inside to carry on. There's nothing she wants more right now then to fly away from this wretched place and continue flying until she forgot who she was. Forgot everything she's ever done, everything that's ever happened to her.

She hardly remembered the family she came from anyway so what would it matter. This place had taken away her joy, her spirit. Her earliest memories of this place were as unpleasant as they come. Not quite a teenager yet, un-bled and pure.

She was as fresh as they come, untouched and unaware of her body. Oh, how that changed.

There wasn't a part Ivan left unscathed when he concluded her training. With nothing else left to live for she gave everything she had into pleasing her Master in the hopes one day she may be rewarded with freedom. Only a few years went by and she'd given up all hope of ever leaving this place on good-will. She made him too much money.

The temple between her legs was also her curse.

Nyrie had never imagined having her own children. She couldn't even fathom the meaning of love. Brax was the only person she would consider a friend, someone who made her tummy feel weird when she was around him. He was someone she wanted to see all the time, whether she liked to admit it or not.

Thinking of him now only blurred her vision with tears.

Perhaps it was a fear of rejection, of being left alone. Perhaps it was a coincidence, or she was sobbing too loudly but there were soft knocks on the door, followed by Brax.

She quickly wiped away her tears and inhaled a steadying, shaky breath.

He stood in the doorway, holding the door half open. His hesitation to rush right up to her told Nyrie he was unsure of himself. Perhaps he was just as scared as she was to face each other after everything they'd just been through. She had so many questions to ask him.

Nyrie wanted to talk to him again just like they used to, without this awkward bullshit. So, she pushed her sheets off, sat up, and patted the bed beside her.

A silent request for him to come inside.

This time he didn't hesitate when he strode over. Thankfully Clive was not in tow.

Again, when he sat and their eyes met, there was nothing there besides silence.

Nyrie was just about to break the tension, but she didn't have to.

"I'm so sorry."

Her heart cracked from the sorrowfulness in his tone. Seeing him so vulnerable in front of her when he was supposed to be a big, strong rock for both of them always hurt her. He suffered a lot because of her she realised. But saying it was OK, that everything was going to be OK just wasn't the right answer.

So she found a better one.

"You did what you had to do." She told Brax.
