This is a topic both sides share.
Most of you know that I have dreadlocks. It is a cool style. Everyday, people pass me and say nice things like: "I like your dreads!" or "You look pretty with those!"
Hearing that from random people makes me confident about my hair. It is awfully long... reaching down to my lower back. I bet I'll be sitting on them in several months...
Aside that, there are struggles with having dreadlocks. I will list the most FRUSTRATING ones. 😃
1. Morning schedules.
We all wake up the same. Get up. Use the restroom. Brush your teeth, take shower... It depends on your day, really.Getting toothpaste on your dreads is NOT supposed to be part of the thing, here! Not only do I get the foamy stuff on it. If I move my head, the caught dread will mix with the others... and I have to find it again to get rid of the toothpaste...
2. Sleeping.
Oh, no. I'm fine. I can have a great rest, but is is impossible to sleep without being all over your hair. I can't sleep in a ponytail. It feels uncomfortable.
I wake up every morning with my head lying on my long hair.It gets worse when you are sharing a bed with a little sister. I wake up and try to get up only to have my hair pulled by body weight...
3. Food.
Ah. Nothing is better than eating a nice plate of spaghetti with your family...Oh. A few of my locks decided to dive into the sauce.
4. Public.
People would randomly walk to me and touch my hair WITHOUT asking.
Excuse me. I don't know you.
I don't know where your hands had been.
I never said you can touch them.
Who the heck do you think you are?5. Questions.
"Is it real?"
Nah. I'm wearing a mop."How long have you grown them?"
Long enough for it to be this long."What happens if you don't want them anymore? Do you have to shave it all off?"
Please. I don't want to picture that..."Do they ever stink?"
That is so rude! No! We wash them regularly!"Can I touch them?"
...6. Hygine.
I will admit I have days I just don't want to wash them.
Look. I WANT to wash them but I don't at the same time.
I want to because I need to.
I don't want to because OH MY GOD IT TAKES AGES!First of all, regular shampoo never works. I need special shampoo for dreads. I don't know about other dreadlock people.
Second of all, I have to get it soaked and scrub all the way around to nake sure not a speck of dirt is there. Unlike regular hair, dandruff builds up crazy along with sweat. That is the downside, so you have to be careful. (At least the fresh smell lingers longer.)
Once that is done, you have to squeeze the water out like you would do with a wet towel.
Yes. Seriously. I am not kidding.I have to twist them while they are still wet. It makes them stay in place.
I have to wash my hair before 6. Otherwise, they will still be damp before I head for bed. Trust me. Back when I was 13, I slept with damp hair and woke up with the smell of mildew. Don't ever make that mistake.
They take FOREVER to dry.
It takes me around 2-3 hours to retwist each and every lock.
Once that is done... I celebrate. It's a great feeling.
... Urgh. I have to wash them today...
7. Bags.
Bookbags, really. If my hair is down and I let the bag slip from my shoulder, the strap snatches my hair with it and it is the WORST feeling ever...8. Bathing.
If I am taking a bath and I don't want my hair wet if it just got done, it is difficult. The tips of my dreads get wet anyways.9. Rain.
My worst enemy. My hair turns into a mop.10. Did you feel that?
Imagine strolling through your phone at night. A bug crawls across your arm. You slap it...
Wait. It's just a dreadlock.Do you have your own hair problems? Share it in the comments!
