Humanity is almost dead. Not everyone sees it, but it's happening. Jameson, Connor, Dudley and I are working on a vaccine that will surely save our species.
I bring the tray of needles to the back of the building. We have thirteen volunteers, not as much as I was hoping for. As I walk to the back, I can see our volunteers lined up on a wall. I wave to them as a signal to follow me.
When I reach the back room, Dudley and Connor are seated by a row of long tables."Hey, where's Jameson?" I ask.
"No idea," replies Connor "all he said was that he's gonna be a bit late."
I set the tray on the table closest to the left wall and tell the volunteers to take a seat. They all look nervous. I don't blame them. The first volunteer is a woman. She's tall, thin and seems to be around fifty. When I inject her with the vaccine, she screams. She babbles on about how it burns and begs for it to stop. The skin around the injection area is turning slightly grey.
By the end of every vaccination, each volunteer is left in tears. I'm even surprised to see grown men to be acting this way. They're men for God's sake!
I send the group to their chambers while the vaccine takes affect. I decide to go to sleep as well.I wake up to a strange gurgling sound. I look to my left and see the wall. Of course. I look to my right and see the door. I weakly get up from my bed and walk in the direction of the sound. The strange sound leads me to the chambers.
It's coming from the seventh chamber.I open the door to find Connor laying on the ground, blood seeping from his stomach. His arms and legs are bent in awkward positions and his mouth is left ajar. The sight was etched into my mind.
I ran from the room, heart beating faster than ever. I can barely hear my scrambled thoughts over my breathe and heart beat. Next thing I know, I run right into one of the volunteers. At first, I was happy to see him, but then I got a better look at the scene.
His face and hands were stained with blood, pieces of what I hope is animal's meat stuck in his fingernails. Nope it's human flesh. In his left hand he holds Dudley by the neck. Dudley is limp and clearly dead.I run away from the man and make my way to the exit. As I'm running towards the door, I see Jameson walk in. He looks at me and smiles, but the smile quickly vanishes. I suddenly feel something grab me by the arm, whatever it is, it has a tight, painful grip. I can barely hear Jameson's screams over the sound of my owns screams. I could feel my arm being torn out of its socket and soon enough, it was interrupted with a loud pop. I look behind me only to see a woman holding my dismembered arm. This makes me scream even louder. The pain I feel is unbearable. Before I could scream for any longer, my voice gives out.
I must have torn my vocals chords.I fall to the ground, practically drowning in my own blood. The last thing I see is the woman's foot falling to my face. All the work and hours put into this vaccine is just a waste. We've created monsters, not saviors. I can feel my face cave in on itself as the woman's foot drives through my skull. All I can feel is agonising pain, but it slowly fades away.
Everything fades away.
