When i walked into Max's office i saw Jeanine sitting in his chair and him in the only other chair in the room. I walked over to the window and looked out. I saw the train pass by right as Jeanine started talking. "We have finished the simulations. They will be brought over as soon as possible, but--" I ignore whatever she says after that and think about how Four was so intent on not letting the Stiff fight today. Maybe he likes her, if he does then i have finally found a weakness of his, two Stiffs joining Dauntless within a two year period? That's almost unheard-- "Eric, did you hear what Jeanine just said?" Max said sternly cutting off my thoughts. "I said that we still need to know how many Dauntless we are going to put under the serum. We wont put any loyal leaders but i want a few Dauntless that are strong to be out of the serum and be protecting the compound, because this is where we will place the control. I also am trying to create a serum that the Divergent rebels wont be able to resist. It finally looks promising. If you find any Divergent inside the compound, kill them, they are to idiotic to be of any use. But if a few get out and are acting as the mindless Dauntless around them, bring them to me." Jeanine states, this is why they put Jeanine in charge, she's good at strategies. "Okay i will give a list of Dauntless members and maybe a few initiates we can trust and that are strong." I nod. "Is that all? I should get started with the listings." I say still looking out the window. I worry that if i make eye contact with Jeanine i will think of my parents. When i was in Erudite i remember Jeanine being good friends with both my parents. "Max please leave, i would like to talk to Eric alone." Jeanine said as if it was a order although she makes it look like a friendly gesture. Of course Max obeyed he is like her lapdog. As soon as Max left Jeanine turned toward me, i could see her reflection in the window, and walked up to me. "I thought you would have wanted to know how your parents are doing." She says, i would have thought she was sad now, but i know her. "They were my family. Were. They are not related to me anymore." I say coldly. "Well then i guess you wouldn't care that your mother is in terrible shape--" I cut her off with a snort and retorted "Why would i care?" But she just ignored that i even cut off and continued "Because your brother got kicked out of Erudite, hes factionless now. And your father buried himself in his work to the point that he never leaves his office desk except for eating and the occasional shower." I froze after she said the words 'your brother got kicked out of Erudite, he's factionless now.' I don't want to believe it but it sounds just like him. I knew he got and aptitude for Abnegation but didn't transfer for two reasons. The first is because Abnegation and Erudite are enemies, and the second is because i left. Him being selfless didn't want to let our parents deal with the loss of both their children, one to the enemy. "Why?" I asked still trying to act like i didn't care still. "You know why, now every Erudite know. His Abnegation showed, He was late to meetings three times because he let someone take his spot in a train or elevator, or he stopped to help someone carry things home." She said with no emotion. I notice the sky getting light and so does she, "Just saying, If you didn't leave, they might have been happier. Having at least one child with them. They already had to deal with the pain of losing one child. Now this? I don't think your mother can handle much more family issues while assisting me in creating the new serum that is supposed to control the Divergent. One wrong move and our research that has been going on since before you were born could go up in smoke within minutes maybe seconds." She still has no emotion in her voice. I was about to excuse myself and go to my room but she beat me to it. "I would love to stay and chat over a pot of tea about how your life has been but the serum wont make itself. Its logically impossible. Good-bye, Eric Harris." And then she was gone. I finally let out a breathe and went into the hallway walking toward my room. Jeanine is the only one who knows the place to hit the hardest that will do the most damage to me. And that's my brother. The only thing i care about other than being the best and the most important.
