(Hunter) Spencer and I's plane ride was interesting. He taught me how to play chess and we talked about ourselves a bit. I never mentioned the .... dragon. "Next stop Minneapolis St. Paul airport terminal 1 American." "Oh, and passengers stay seated and buckled till we land. Thanks and have a great day." Spencer looks at me. I could see that he actually wanted to spend more time to gather. I just turned and looked out the window. When I realized that it was snowing. "Is that snow?" Spencer laughs. "Ya most definitely. You've never seen snow?" I shake my head still staring out. I could barely see the lights on the runway. Then the plane jolted telling us we have hit the ground. I started feeling nervous. Spencer must have noticed. "It's okay I will stay with you till we find them." I nodded. "Thanks, Spencer." I gave him a hug and he hugged back. We walked out with literally nothing except Spencer's bag. We walked off the plane and out of the lobby straight to pick up. Spencer and i looked around and seen dozens of cars and trucks waiting. All of them had signs like a welcome home or we missed you.
Finally, I saw a sign with my name on it. The guy who was holding it was not at all of what I expected. He was skinny tall had a black trench coat and a black fedora and some dark glasses. Spencer and I walked up to him. He threw the sign in the car and held out a hand."Joseph Smith. And you must be Hunter Wilton. "He gave me a mean handshake. I just nodded shyly. He let go and looked at Spencer who was several inches taller than him. "And you must be?" He put out his hand. "Spencer, Spencer Reid. I'm a federal agent making sure Hunter gets to Minnesota without trouble." They shook hands pretty aggressively. "Well, I better get going. Call me Hunter if you need anything. See ya." He hands me a card. "Thanks, Spencer." He nodded and leaves.
Joseph looks at me. "Let's get you in the car." I nod my arms were really cold. He opens the passenger door and I hop into the pre-heated car. It felt nice. He gets in and we drive off. We sit in silence for the whole car ride as Joseph blares some really hardcore rock music. I think at some point I fell asleep because I woke up to Joseph tapping my shoulder. I couldn't hear his music so that was good. "Hey kid um I forgot to mention Nina isn't gonna be here for a while." I raised one eyebrow. " why?" He starts to play with his car keys. "Because she gotta call from work. The told her she had to go to Paris France. For something she didn't tell me." He looks down at the floor.
Then he opens the door. I look around and I see we are on a block full of houses. We must be here. I open the door. And step out and look at the house dead ahead. It had a red door with dark gray-black shingles. The house was a plain white with white shutters to match. It seemed normal.
I follow Joseph to the front door. He looks through the keys until he gets to silver and redone. He unlocked the door. And almost on point, a small Labrador puppy barrels out of the door. He slams head first into Joseph's legs. "This is Charlie. He's kind of a brute at first but after a while, he's pretty chill." I nodded as the little golden puppy jumps all over. Joseph picks him up and cares him into the house like a baby. "Umm hey Hunter. Could you make sure the door is shut? Charlie likes to go outside and Chase cars so I don't want him to get hit." I walk in and shut the door. It's a beautiful home. It seems like it could be from a movie. To my right is coat hanger with several coats and shoe shelf underneath them. In front of me is a staircase out the left the side of the wall. And on the right is a hallway with one door on the right and another door straight ahead but it's a sliding glass door leading to a backyard. And just in front of me, there are two doorways. I look to the one on the right and it's the kitchen. It's a classic kitchen gas stove top. A metal refrigerator that looks brand new, compared to everything else in the kitchen. A center island piece with a hanging rack for pots pans and ladles. Cabinets above the stove sink and countertops. And draws beneath the countertops. It had stools on the kitchen island. I go back to the hallway and look into the room on the left.
It's the living room. It has two Sofas a recliner chair. A beautiful brick fireplace. A flat-screen tv mounted right above. The sofas were a creamy color and the recliner matching. The carpet was a darker brown. The walls were painted a chocolate brown. With white trim. There were two windows one that was covered with dark curtains and another letting in the light to see the room.
"Hey." I turned to see Joseph. He finally took off his hat glasses and coat. He looked like an adult trying to be a teenager. He had brown fluffy hair that stood straight up in the front. He had a bit of acne on his face. And he was wearing a black and gray long sleeve shirt. Which had a flaming skull? "Hey," I said stupidly. "I'm gonna show you your room." He turns around and walks up to the elegant staircase. The railing was a smooth shiny wood. Which the spindles matching in white. I take one step on the stairs and I hear a loud creak and groan.
I follow Joseph quickly. I get to the top stairs and to the left is a door and to the right is a hallway. Joseph's holding a door open. "This is the bathroom so you know. Behind you is my room." I look behind me to the single door next to the stairs. A plain cream door. I look again at the hallway and Joseph had already moved to a room right across from the bathroom.
"And here's your room." I walk up next to him and peer into the room. The walls a brilliant blue. The carpet was a sandy creamy color. The bed was on the right and it had gray comfort it's twin sized. On the other side, there was a desk. With a lamp and a wheelchair. Next to that is a dresser. And in between both sides of the room sat a window leading out on to the roof and overlooking the neighbor's houses."I will buy you some clothes in the morning and school supplies." I nod. Joseph looked at me for a couple of seconds then started staring out the window. "Umm, Hunter." When he says my name he looks at the floor for a couple of seconds then at me. "Do you wanna talk with me in the kitchen?" I shrug. "Sure." I follow him back down the stairs. When we get to the kitchen I sit on one of the stools. He picks a pan. "Do you like campfire eggs?" "What's campfire eggs?" He turns and looks at me. He puts his finger on his chin and makes one of those thinking faces. "Well, it's pretty much eggs hashbrowns and cheese mixed together." He looks at me. "Uhh sure?" He pulls eggs and stuff out of the fridge.
"So what did your parents do for a living." I start to get all sweaty and hot. " Ummm... A carpenter and a designer. My dad would build houses or fix them up he taught me a lot about buildings. And my mother was a designer she would design houses. My parents just bought a house in Georgia. And they were fixing it up and designing it. Till..."I felt tears coming but I pushed them away. "Till they died." I just stare at the floor. I could feel Joseph staring at me. "Ohh." He said with a more softer quieter tone.
"So what do you do for a living?" As I look up he's already facing the stove. "A teacher at the school here. As an American history teacher. I've kinda always been interested in our nation's history since I was a young kid." He chuckles. He must be thinking of his childhood. "Coool." The awkward silence comes back. The sound of sizzling eggs is the only thing loud enough to hear.
"So what kinda music do you like?" "Country music like Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia line and stuff." He nodded."not bad." I look at him weirdly." you." He turns around with a smug look on his face. "Punk rock, baby." He sounds like one of those old rock and roll singers. I just shrug. "What! You just shrug what the hey man?" I don't understand a thing he just said. "Cool, I guess." He just rolls his eyes and goes back to cooking his eggs.
" so Joseph how old are you?" He turns around. " Well here's the first thing just call me Joe. And second I'm 23. This is my first year actually teaching. I was an assistant for a bit. While I was in school but don't worry I know a lot of the kids that will be in your grade to help you around." He turns back around. He pulls a couple of plates out of a cupboard. He sets them down and loads one with campfire eggs and another with a little less. You open a cupboard drawer and pulls out two forks. He picks them up and put the one with fewer campfire eggs in front of me and right across he sets his down. Next, the graves out of the fridge some orange juice and a cup out of the dish strainer. Pouring himself some juice he sits down. He first looks at his food than me. "You hunger?" Then I realize I should be eating. So I grave my fork and try the steaming eggs. It tasted great warm and cheesy. Joe stops looking at me and starts eating. After eating Joe looks at the time. "I think I'm heading to bed." I follow Joe upstairs and head to my room and decide to do the same.
