I was still wary of Caroline, but after her speech, I didn’t need constant comforting from Colin to be able to stand next to her while staying in human form. I still needed Colin to be near me, but I was going to need him near me anyways. We had just mated, and I’d already found out how bad an idea being away from him so soon would be.

The meeting had ended and the wolves had all gone back to their typical routines. Now it was just Colin, Caroline, Mark, and me in Mark’s office. Mark and Caroline were sitting on one side of the desk, while I sat with Colin on the other. We were discussing how we would make it all work, having a vampire living with them, and Colin and I being mates.

“The other packs aren’t going to understand. What are we going to do if they try to uhhh… kill mom.” Colin questioned.

“If another pack finds out, we’ll give them her story, simplified, the best we can. They don’t have to agree with us, and I doubt they’d challenge us. Even if they did, we have the largest pack, and I’m sure we can count on your pride joining us, right Katrina?” Mark added.

“Um… yeah. Well, you have me at least, but like I said, we don’t have leaders. I can’t force anyone to do anything, but I’m sure Tyra and Sashara would help if I ask them. I can’t promise you Maury, and  don’t think you’d actually want Lillian. She’s still young, and a bit unpredictable.” I answered.

“Okay. That’s fine. I understand that your pride works differently than our pack.” Mark responded.

“I’m not really worried about other wolves. I know we could handle that, but what are we going to do about other vamps? It’s very common for vampires to follow others’ scents when looking to expand their coven, and we’ve been attacked before without having a vampire in the house. I remember it very well.” Caroline interjected.

“I don’t know. We weren’t prepared then. I don’t think we’re prepared now either, but I suppose we’d fight, the same as always.” Colin answered.

“I’ll need to prepare everyone then. Now, Katrina, explain the purple eye.” Caroline spoke in a plain, serious tone, but I had no idea what she was talking about. There was nothing to explain.

“Yes. I was wondering about that too, but I never really had a good time to ask.” Mark added.

“What are you guys talking about? There’s nothing to explain. One of my eyes is purple in cat form. So what?” I said a little angrily.

“Werecats’ cat forms don’t have mix-matched eyes. Real cats might, but they follow different rules. I believe that a witch may have been involved. Purple is their characteristic color. Where there’s witch magic, there’s the color purple. Maybe you should ask your parents and pride, because it’s definitely not natural.” Mark explained. I didn’t realize that I’d been only inhaling as he talked, and all the air came out as soon as he finished.

“Um… yeah, sure. I will.” I mumbled. Honestly, I’d never thought anything of my eye, or witches. I knew they existed, but I’d never met one, as far as I knew that is. I’d always just acknowledged that they were “out there”, like polar bears. I’d never seen one of those in real life either and I didn’t really give them much thought. They were just “out there”, but now they were telling me that my eye wasn’t natural, and that I should be concerned with witches.

“Okay. So, do you sleep still, Caroline?” Mark began moving on, and I was glad. They were making me uncomfortable pointing out something was wrong with me.

“No, and I should be out most nights, to drink. It’s probably the best time for it, easier to stay unnoticed, and it’s not exactly easy to go out in the day, what with the whole burning thing…” Caroline explained.
