“Ella? Hello Ella? DANIELLA!”
My focus was broken by my best friend, Vanessa, practically yelling into my ear. We were sitting in our last period class which happened to be calculus. Lucky for us we sat right next to each other. However unlucky for us, we both sucked at math and instead of concentrating we did more to distract each other than anything else.
“WHAT?! I’m actually trying to understand this!”
“Yeah, well how’s that working out for you?”
“Not so good…”
“I could tell.”
We gave each other a blank stare and then once we couldn’t hold it any longer we burst into laughter which in turn earned us a dirty look from our teacher Mrs. Dawson. That shut us both up pretty quickly. I turned my attention back to the whiteboard where Mrs. Dawson was writing equations and explaining how to solve them.
About ten minutes before the afternoon announcements Mrs. Dawson stopped teaching to assign us homework and then she let us talk the remainder of the class.
“So, why were you trying to get my attention before?” I said turning to Vanessa after I copied down the night’s assignment into my notebook.
“I wanted to know if you were going to the game tonight!”
Oh right, the basketball game. It was against our rival school, you know the whole north versus south school district type thing. There were signs everywhere advertising the game and they’ve been bringing it up on the morning and the afternoon announcements all week. If you couldn’t tell already, the game’s a big deal. Basically the whole school would probably show up.
“I’m not too sure, I’ll probably go… It’ll get me out of the house at least.”
“Good because I wanted to go but I wouldn’t know who to sit with if you aren’t going.”
Before I could answer Mrs. Dawson quieted the class so we could all hear the announcements before the dismissal bell. At the sound of the bell everyone rushed out of class.
“Text me and we’ll meet up tonight!” called Vanessa before she walked out of class.
I nodded as I gathered my things and then walked out of class. Vanessa’s locker was in the complete opposite direction of mine so we were forced to separate at the end of the day.
Vanessa and I were two peas in a pod. We’ve been best friends since preschool and not much has really changed between us. I mean except for the fact we were older, dressed better, developed boobs and a butt, and of course we’re now seniors. She is my closest friend and I really don’t know what I would do without her.
I drove the usual fifteen minutes back home. I pulled into my completely empty driveway and parked in my usual spot. I took a deep breath before opening the front door and walking inside.
It was quiet, thank god. I went into the kitchen to find a note from my mom hanging on the refrigerator. It read:
Dear Dani,
I had to step out, don’t know when I’ll be home. Please get your little sister off the bus. I left some money for you to order pizza for dinner. See you soon.
-Mom
It was almost three now and my little sister, Savannah, usually got home around four. I had an hour to myself. I decided now was a good a times as ever to do some of my weekend homework, might as well get it out of the way. I sat at the kitchen table doing my math homework.
