Within a minute I found myself sitting in the passenger seat of Austin’s car. He drove an all red range rover.

“So Ella how is it we go to the same school but I’ve never seen you around?”

I didn’t surprise me whatsoever that he had never noticed me. But in a way I was sort of offended. I mean it’s not like we weren’t in the same grade or anything, we’re both seniors. Come to think of it we have the same lunch and we’ve had classes together years previous.

“Maybe you just weren’t paying close enough attention?” I suggested.

“Why do you say that?”

“I don’t know take a guess Mr. Basketball Superstar?” I joked.

Austin chuckled, “Alright, alright. I get it.”

“Congratulations on the win by the way, I saw you make the winning shot.”

“Thank you” He replied flashing me a smile.

“You’re welcome. It’s coming up on the left, the house with the blue mailbox.”

Austin made the turn into Vanessa’s driveway and put his car in park. I unbuckled my seatbelt and slid out of the passenger seat. I threw my bag over my shoulder and thanked Austin for the ride. He waved goodbye and then put the car in reverse.

I watched as he drove back the way we came. I had just talked to Mr. Popular himself. To be completely honest I had expected him to be a little cocky and arrogant but I guess it goes to show that popularity doesn’t necessarily meant stuck up. He made me feel comfortable. Talking to him felt like talking to one of my best friends not someone I had just met.

Vanessa’s mom used to operate a dance company from their home, which meant an addition had been built on the side for a studio. Eventually her mom’s company took off and she had enough money to renovate her own building. But that left the giant addition on the side of the house useless. The solution? Vanessa moved her room to the addition.

It was like she lived alone, she had her own bathroom and mini kitchen in there. You didn’t even have to go through the main house to get inside.

I walked over to Vanessa’s door and knocked, I had texted her while I was in the car with Austin to give her a heads up that I’d be over. I heard movement behind the door and after a couple minutes the door swung open.

“Hey Ella, come on in!”

I walked inside shutting the door behind me and dropping my bag to the floor. Being at Vanessa’s was like a second home. Half the time I would rather be here than my own house. Her family treated me like a second daughter and I’d always been welcome at any time.

“Thanks for letting me come over so last minute.”

“It’s no problem. You know my family loves having you.”

The rest of the night consisted of us watching movies until we both fell asleep in the middle of The Vow. Vanessa never questioned why I came over so last minute. I’ve done it ever since we’ve been friends so I guess she had no reason to question it. I didn’t really feel like explaining it either. Yeah my dad’s an asshole. There wasn’t much I could do about it.

The next morning Vanessa and I had breakfast with the rest of her family. Once we were finished I excused myself and got my things ready to leave. Vanessa offered to give me a ride back home and I gratefully expected. In no time we were pulling into my driveway, I got out and waved goodbye before Vanessa left.

I noticed my dad’s car was gone. I let out a sigh of relief. Thank god I won’t have to face him right away. I was still angry with him and I’m sure he was still angry with me.

As I had previously anticipated the house was quiet. I went into my parent’s room to find my mom fast asleep. I let her be. She would most likely sleep most of the day away. She always did after a fight with my dad. I went on upstairs to my room where I found Savannah lying on my bed with the tv on.

I sat down next to her and gave her a big hug. She smiled and then continued watching the tv. Sav probably stayed in my room the entire night. I hated that I had to leave her here alone while my parents were fighting. She didn’t understand what was happening between them. I knew she realized there was something wrong but she’s too young to really comprehend the entire situation. She’s better off not knowing. There are plenty of days I wished I didn’t.

The fighting began the night after the accident. It started as bickering but over time it developed into raised voices, the raised voices became shouts, and I hoped with all my heart that it would stop there.

It all led back to that night. My dad was still bitter about it all and my mom was still coping. Savannah was only three so she hasn’t a single recollection of what had happened. But for me it was freshman year, and it was a night I’d never forget. As much as I wanted to forget it, it was always there. It is a part of me and it’ll never go away.

A/N: These first two chapters are to get the plot rolling. Please keep in mind I'm making this story more on the realistic side. Things happen slightly slower but it all leads up to something greater. Thank you for reading as always!
