Romano’s POV---
“Emily, do you want to go to the beach?” I asked while she was cooking breakfast one morning. Benny was off in the living room watching television and the thought popped into my head. Besides, if we went to the beach that meant I could get Emily into a bathing suit…
“Sure! Benny would love that, I’m sure. When do you think we should all go?” she asked with that look in her eyes- the look that’s too kind to say no and too happy to disappoint. I could slowly feel myself becoming soft over the months, and it was all because of that look (and others, like her puppy dog eyes).
“We could go today. You said that you had nothing to do and I’m free, so why not?” I said eagerly. She nodded her head happily and called Benny into the kitchen for breakfast as we explained what we’d be doing for the day. Luckily, I had already bought beach supplies for Benny earlier in the summer because I didn’t know when we could go, but I still wanted to.
At the beach---
“Mama, can I go play in the water?” Benny asked excitedly. I watched as Emily chuckled and stood, FINALLY about to take of the shorts and flowing top she wore over her bathing suit. I never understood why she hated showing other people how beautiful she was. She wasn’t fat, she wasn’t ugly, and she certainly had no reason to hide her perfection, but she still did- especially from me.
I was able to enjoy seeing her in that blue two-piece, though I must say I had fun just being near her. Benny lit up my day, too. It really was like we were a family, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more in my life.
“Romano, don’t just sit there! Come on!” she waved me over to the very shallow part of the water where the tides lap at the beach. I chuckled as Benny hopped and splashed in the water, splatting sand across his legs as well. When he fell, Emily set him back on his feet again and he continued to play.
“Benny, do you want to build a sand castle? I’ll help you!” I laughed as Benny’s eyes lit up and he padded over to where I stood with a bucket full of wet sand. I have to admit I had fun myself acting like a little kid with the child I considered to be my son.
“Papa, I’ll go get more wet sand!” he shouted happily and sped off to the water.
“Make sure you come right back! And don’t go too far out, Benny!” Emily yelled after him as she made her way towards me.
“You have no idea how much I love that bathing suit, Mil.” I closed the distance between us and encircled her with my arms. She really did have no idea what she did to me. She was more than beautiful; in fact, it would be an insult to call her that.
“Romano, there are children around here!” She didn’t get another chance to say anything because our mouths were moving in sync with one another. I don’t even remember how long we stayed like that…
Emily’s POV---
I was immediately silenced for the next fifteen minutes by Romano’s feverish lips, not that I was complaining. I loved him too much for my own good, and I tended to loose myself in those brown eyes of his.
All other thoughts left my mind while we had our little “moment.” I hadn’t even stopped to think about more important things at the moment until I heard it.
“Mama!” I was in complete “mother” mode as I raced towards the water looking for Benny. I knew that scream all too well; it sounded very much like the screams he’d produced during the fire.
“Benny, Mama’s coming!” I shouted as I frantically searched for my little boy. I saw him in the water and an unfamiliar man swimming away very suspiciously. “Romano, get that man, I’ll get Benny!” I ordered.
