"One," the oldest boy mouths, clutching his crowbar.
She nods, eyes gleaming. She'd finally be able to show off her skills. To prove to her idols that she was worthy, that she could, and would, protect them until her last breath.
After all, they were the last people alive that she loved.

"Two."
She grips her knife, eyeing the snarlers that were a mere 10 feet from her.

"Three."
She launches herself out from behind the wall, and closes in on an unsuspecting snarler.

With a satisfying shink her knife enters its skull, rendering it 'lifeless' once again.
It drops like a sack of potatoes, and she looks up, narrowing down her next target.

Out of the corner of her eye she spies her partner hacking away at another two. He pounded his weapon into its head, waiting for it to finally give up and die.

She turns back around, making sure the other snarlers weren't enclosing on him.

Thankfully they were still oblivious.

She pushes some stray hairs out of her eyes with her free hand, and gets ready to charge.

A snarler slowly turns around, hobbling on its uneven legs.
Its face contorts into a ravenous expression, and begins limping towards the knife wielder.
She puts her arm out as if a towel was draped over it, and slams into the snarler with full force, causing it to stumble back and fall. She slams one foot down on its arm, and shoves her knife into its skull, blood oozing out.

Two down.

She flicks her knife, scarlet blood being thrown off, splattering onto the ground. She hears a grunt from the boy, and whirls around, expecting the worst, but sees him standing triumphantly over a body, tugging out the crowbar from where it was wedged into its skull.

She offers a small smile, before quickly turning back around to deal with the remaining snarlers.

This one was big. Much taller than her.
"Jin!" she hastily called, slowly backing up, making sure to keep its attention, since she was unaware of what Jin was dealing with.

"Little occupied here!" he shouts back, as the sound of a bone cracking rings out, followed by a growl.

The towering snarler was still making its way towards her, as well as another buddy of the it.

Her mind was racing a million miles an hour, trying to find a solution to this. She either
1- waited for Jin to finish, then together they take down the big snarler, with no room for error, and proceed to quickly take out the smaller one
2- allowed the snarlers to corner her and Jin in the alley, which could prove to be a fatal mistake
3- split up, leaving Jin alone with the bigger one, which could put him in danger
4- leave Jin to take care of the snarler he was battling with, run past the taller snarler to take out the smaller one, and distract it until Jin was ready, and he could attack it from behind

All seemed too complicated, and they were still coming at her.
"I swore I would protect them," she mutters, deciding on her course of action.

She grips her knife with both hands, and runs directly at the incoming snarler. It growls at her, arms outstretched, delighted that its next meal was making its way towards it.

At the last possible second she changes her footwork, and barrels past the snarler and into the smaller one, hitting it in the stomach, causing it to lurch and fall back.

The larger one grunts, surprised at the sudden change of events. How did its snack slip between its fingers? It slowly turns around on its decaying legs to catch its prey.

Meanwhile she stands poised above the downed snarler, and slams her boot into its face, earning a loud crunch. Just to be sure she slips her knife into its vulnerable eye, and straight into its brain.

Knowing her job wasn't done, she jumps back up on her feet, and gets ready to attack the larger snarler.

"Jin," she worriedly says, debating her chances of success without his help.
She looks back, making sure she wasn't cornering herself.

There was no way she was making that mistake too.

No response.

"Jin!" she yells, starting to question her next move. The snarler was still a good ten feet away, but it was walking directly in the middle of the alley. It'd be nearly impossible to go around it again.
"Shit," she mutters, placing her hand on her gun. She really didn't want to use it, but her options were now slim.
She slipped it out of her in between her pants and her sweaty skin, and cocked it, holding it at eye level, prepared to shoot if Jin didn't assist her.

Any moment now she silently pleaded, the snarler three feet away.

She moved her hand to the trigger, and held her breath to steady her gun.
A second later there was a grunt, and the snarler went limp and fell to the floor.

"Sorry I'm a bit late," Jin frets, coming up from behind the dead snarler.
It's now splayed out across the ground, blood seeping out from the wound Jin inflicted.

She stares, eyes wide, at the broad shouldered man.
"No need to apologize," she musters out, lowering her gun.

If she had fired a few seconds earlier, Jin could've been shot.
No way I'll let that happen. Next time I won't fire if they're near. I'll wait until the snarler's practically on me.

"Well, this place is clear. Should we head back?" he inquires, wiping his crowbar on the downed snarler's shirt.

"Yeah," she replies, still shell shocked at her almost fatal mistake.

"They're waiting for us," she continues, putting the safety back on her gun and tucking it back in its secure location between her back and pants.
