It had been almost two weeks that I've arrived and I had been staying inside. My uni didn't start for me for another month, and I didn't know London all that well. However, I wasn't about to start to repeat the days again. The first chance I get to go outside, I would take it, because I was desperate to do something new. Lucky for me, that day was closer than I thought.
On Thursday, Eli came up to me and started blurting, "Hi Celi, you want to go with me outside? I need a walk around town every once in a while, and you're new to London so I thought I would bring you along soooooo what do you say?" Jeez this girl is cheery. She was still really nice and there was no way I would pass up on this opportunity so obviously, I 200% agreed to go with her.
Going outside for the first time was a mix of emotions. I felt kinda scared, constantly thinking I was going to lose Eli, even though I wouldn't let her leave my sight. It was also fun and new, because it was a brand new place with brand new people. I couldn't have made a better decision. I was ready to go until I heard Eli squeak, "Um Celica, you're kinda making my arm go numb."
I looked down, seeing Eli's arm was turning slightly red. Ok, so maybe I was I little nervous going outside. But I laughed, "Sorry Eli, I guess I'm just nervous about going out into the streets of London for the first time." She laughed back, and said, " It's fine, I was nervous too when I had first moved here from Ireland last year, but turns out, I was afraid for nothing." I took her words of advice, and it calmed me down for the most part. I was calm enough to go and explore.
As soon as we opened the door of the lounge, the crisp, yet sunny weather of London in the summer hit us like a rocket. if the weather was going to be this perfect, taking a walk wasn't going to be all that bad.
Now we've been out for about an hour and it's around four. Nothing exciting has really happened, the weather had gotten cooler, making me shiver a little, and all we really did was shop and talk about why we moved here. Apparently, she moved here because her parents were always fighting with her and her brother's in a mental ward, so she couldn't keep up with all the emotions. She graduated college early, because she was uber smart. My explanation, well it went on for a little longer.
I had said, "Well, it started with me wanting to just live here in a new country, but then, stuff started happening. My sister didn't really like or communicate with me and never cared about what was happening in my life, my brother moved to New York, and my mom had been so cruel and vicious to me. In fact, two years before I had moved here, she had started beating me every day with no apparent reason. My dad didn't really care about me or my feelings. In fact, one time, we were having a fight (which almost never happened), he had told me that I was a mistake and I'll never be considered normal. I decided to stop dealing with so much pain and cruelty and move where I wanted to be."
When I had finished explaining why I was here, I had noticed she and I were both starting to cry a little. We each tried to comfort each other and when we were clearing our eyes, I bumped into to a guy and knocked down both of our things. He started apologizing,"Oh, God I'm sorry I should have been looking where I was going, ugh I'm so clumsy." I tried to calm him by saying, "Please, no need to apologize, there could have been just thin air between us and I still would have tripped. I'm the definition of clumsy." As my vision started to come back to me, I noticed this guy was actually kind of cute. Lucky me, I bump into somebody, but he's a little cute. Maybe Eli was right. Maybe I didn't have so much to worry about.
We started to head back to our flat at around 5:30. And can I just say, thank you! I loved the little glimpse of London, but my feet were aching. I felt like it had taken us ages to get back to the flat, and Eli was starting to whine a little too, so we just ended up taking a cab back.
Once we got back, I was unpacking all the little perfumes and new clothes and shoes I had bought when I realized something...
