Julian's mother looked back at him through the mirror. He had his legs crossed, and his arm was resting on the edge of the side door, with his chin resting against his palm and his head lying against the window. He was staring out into the street watching the cars pass, and the trees sway in the wind. She smiled, then resumed her gaze onto the road. Julian was on his way home from school. His mother drives him to school and picks him up because the bus to his school dosen't come anywhere near his street.
It was the middle of April, and as usual as it does in Canada in April, it rains. Julian was watching the luminous rain drops trickle down his window. His mother looked back once more at him, then resumed her sight on the road and turned on her window wipers.
Julian was day dreaming about what school would be like the next day, how class would go, who he would hang out with, when all of a sudden, he had this indescribable sensation, to jerk his neck. He couldn't even describe it to himself. It was a feeling that if he didn't do it, it wouldn't leave his mind. He never felt the feeling before, and it almost startled him a bit. But he thought it was nothing, so he just took a deep breath and jerked his head to the left, then right side. He felt instant relief and the feeling he felt went away.
His mother saw a glimpse of him doing so. She asked him "Julian honey, what are you doing?" Julian didn't know how to respond. He didn't know what to tell her because, he himself didn't even know what he was doing. He responded with "nothing" because he didn't want to respond with "I don't know" in fear his mom would get worried. His mother shrugged her shoulders and continued driving.
About three minutes later the strong feeling of needing to jerk his neck came back, but the urge was even stronger. He began to get frustrated, because he didn't know why he felt it again after he just did it. He did it again, but kept jerking his head until he felt satisfied. After he had done it enough that the urge was gone, his mother asked him once again. "Julian, what are you doing?" Julian froze. He didn't know what to say, he didn't even know what he was doing. He took a deep breath and said "I don't know, I can't help it".
