It was sunset. Few birds flew by the camp. The wind blew leaves from the trees. The sky had tints of pink and orange, mixed with deep purples and light blue.
In the hollow, cats were started to get impatient. All stared at the Highledge for their leader to appear. A dark brown tom mewed, irritated "How long will we have to wait? The moon is going to rise soon."
A white and ginger she-cat shivered next to her mate. Her scarred face slightly hurting after the fight, few days earlier. That day, they had lost their last medicine cat Cinderpelt to angry badgers. Leafpool, her apprentice, had disappeared the day before. The Clan had gone almost mad. No other cat had trained to be medicine cat. Only Sandstorm and Brightheart had few knowledge of healing herbs. I hope Cloudtail won't get mad after my decision. The wounded she-cat shivered again, anticipating Firestar's speech.
Finally, the leader appeared, followed by his deputy Graystripe and his mate Sandstorm. His voice was strong. "Dear ThunderClan, we all know our big loss. After Leafpool's disappearance, Cinderpelt died. We are left with no medicine cats. We need a solution and quick. Happily, someone already offered for the post. I know it was a hard decision for her but I'm glad she had the courage for that. From now on, Brightheart will be our medicine cat!"
Half the clan cheered, half simply stared at the white and ginger she-cat. Her mate, Cloudtail, stared at her directly into the eyes. She could see sadness and confusion in his blue gaze. "Why didn't you tell me earlier?" He asked in a soft murmur. "Are you really sure?"
"I'm sure! It was my decision and I thought about it." She replied sharply. The cheering cats slowly went silent and went back to their normal activities, following their leader's silent order. The Clanmates left the couple alone in the center of the camp. There was an awkward silence between them.
Silently, Sandstorm padded towards the scarred cat and ordered her to follow her. Brightheart gave a sad gaze to Cloudtail before following the sandy colored she-cat. "Tonight is the half-moon. You should present yourself to StarClan as our new medicine cat as soon as possible. I will help you prepare."
"Thank you Sandstorm." mewed Brightheart shyly. Will StarClan accept me? What if they don't give me the knowledge to heal my clanmates? I haven't trained to be a medicine cat? What if I fail my Clan? "Everything will be alright." Mewed Sandstorm, as she read the newly named medicine cat's mind.
"It's just... So strange..."
"Why is it so?"
"I thought I'd have new litters with Cloudtail. I don't want to leave Whitepaw alone."
"I know what you mean. I know it can be hard for both you and Cloudtail but you'll get over it. I'm sure."
"Thank you. I just hope Cloudtail know I still love him."
"I'm sure he knows." Sandstorm had finished the herb preparation and she gave it to Brightheart. The leader's mate looked outside the den and mewed calmly "You should hurry, the moon is rising. Do you know where Mothwing, Barkface and Littlecloud meet?"
"I know around where. I'll find my way to the Moon Pool!"
"I sure you will! Now, go!"
Brightheart ate the herbs and ran outside, barely looking around herself. She knew the river between WindClan and ThunderClan lead to the Moon Pool. She scent WindClan and ShadowClan scent as she approached the border or her territory. Her heart pounding in her chest and joy and excitement filled it. She would share dreams with StarClan and get help from her ancestors. She would tell omens to her leader and deliver prophecies. She noticed cat figures near the river. As she got near them, she regconize Littlecloud and Barkface, ShadowClan and WindClan medicine cats. Brightheart crossed the river and walked towards them, catching her breath. "Hi Littlecloud, hi Barkface."
"Hello Brightheart." mewed Littlecloud. "Where is Cinderpelt? And Leafpool?" The she-cat's gaze darkened as she remembered the gory death of the gray she-cat. "Leafpool is gone missing for few days. Cinderpelt is dead."
"What?" Mewed the small tabby tom. "I'm sorry for your loss."
"Are you here to tell us to not wait for ThunderClan?" Asked Barkface, even though Brightheart was sure he already knew the answer.
"No, I decided to follow Cinderpelt's steps and be ThunderClan's new medicine cat."
"Sorry if we are late!" Mewed Mothwing as she and Willowpaw joined the small group. Voletooth had a thorn in his paw right before we left." When she got nearer, she asked "Where are Cinderpelt and Leafpool?"
"Gone." Mewed the new medicine cat. "Leafpool disappeared and Cinderpelt is dead. I'm the new medicine cat." To prevent tears from falling of her only working eye, she spoke with an ice-cold voice. "I'm sorry for your loss Brightheart..." mewed Mothwing. Willowpaw didn't say a word, as if she was too much in shock to talk. "Let's go, we need to be at the Moon Pool before it's too late." mewed Barkface.
Everyone was silent. But Smallcloud broke it. "Do you have herb and healing knowledge Brightheart?" His voice was soft.
"I do but it's not much. Better than nothing."
"If Firestar and Blackstar gives us permission, maybe I can share some of my knowledge with you during short periods of time every two or three days."
"That would be appreciated, thank you." Smallcloud purred.•••
There was no light whatsoever around her. She was helplessly trying to swim in the thick water. The metallic scent of blood was everywhere around her. Brightheart tried to scream for help but no sound came. Her mouth became filled with blood as her head was pulled under the liquid. She felt paw over her head and she tried to claw it. Someone was trying to drown her. Suddenly, the weight disappeared and she reached the surface of the blood river. She gasped for air as bright light blinded her only eye. "Come over here Brightheart. You will be safe." The new medicine cat did not regconize the voice. But, if it was leading her far from the blood river, she'd be happy. She leaped into the light, eye closed. She landed on soft grass, all the blood gone. Her pelt was clean and no blood stain showed in the light green grass. In front of her stood a dark gray she-cat, covered with scars. She was old and wise. She mewed "Brightheart, you are the new Medicine Cat of ThunderClan. You had no healing training and you need to learn as fast as possible. That's why StarClan decided that I, Yellowfang, will be your mentor."
