The Reunion
“My love!” Salvador exclaimed, grabbing Morena around the waist and swinging her around. He met her lips, drawing her into a passionate kiss.
“I've missed you so much,” Morena whispered, letting her lips brush across his cheeks, breath hot against his ear.
Salvador grinned, tears filling his eyes. His hands traveling down her back, squeezing her rear. “It's been years.”
Umbra clicked his teeth, hands securely pressed over Victor and Seraph’s eyes. “Excuse me.”
Cheeks red, Salvador laughed. “Sorry, I got a little carried away.”
Aunora took Victor by the wrist, inspecting the cuffs that bound his hands together. With a firm tug, she freed Victor’s hands, and Victor immediately threw his arms around her, burying his head in her chest. Aunora patted his back while Esper and Seraph joined in on the hug.
Matthew cleared his throat, glancing over his shoulder. “It isn't safe here. We need to get home, right now, before anyone else tries to come in here and fight. Then we can celebrate ”
Umbra raised his scythe, cutting into the air. Runes activated in a flash of blue magic, forming into a portal.
----
Umbra’s feet hit the cold slush of his front yard, the grey sky above him a welcome sight. The Mortis house loomed above him, the light spilling from its windows beckoning him to safety.
A small hand grabbed his arm. Victor appeared beside him, sturdy on his feet despite the teleportation spell.
“You've gotten better with teleportation,” Umbra murmured, flashing him a small, “But try not to lock your knees next time.”
Matthew stretched out his arms, his expression less strained. “Team, we did an amazing job tonight. I'm proud of all of us.”
Aunora let out a whoop, throwing her fist in the air. Seraph clapped softly, smiling.
“As a reward, I'm going to cook us all something nice. What are we feeling tonight? Chicken? Maybe beef?”
Salvador raised a hand. “Mind if I pitch in? I love to cook. Haven't gotten to do it in a while, though.”
“We can brainstorm together, then!” Matthew said, throwing an arm around him.
The team rushed inside, Aunora, Esper, and Seraph piling on the couch and Matthew, Morena and Salvador staying in the kitchen. Victor hovered in the corner of the room, catching Umbra by the sleeve.
“Do you feel okay, Victor?” Umbra asked, watching his pale, sweat stained face.
“I broke my phone. I'm really sorry.”
“What?” Umbra said, blinking, “Oh, I mean, it's fine. I'm just glad you're safe, dear.”
Victor pushed himself against Umbra’s torso, taking a shuddering breath. He managed to crack a grin, breaking through his nerves. “At least I stayed on Earth this time, right?”
Laughing, Umbra tousled Victor’s hair. He regained his composure, leaning down to his eye level. “Hey, Vic, I think you need to go see Seraph. He really missed you.”
Nodding, Victor stumbled into the living room, sitting down beside Seraph. Umbra wanted to watch their reunion, but there was something more pressing on his mind.
“Salvador,” Umbra said quietly, taking him by the arm and pulling him aside.
“Yes? Is something wrong?”
“Why were you being held captive by those people? What were you doing?”
A shadow passed on Salvador’s bright eyes. “I suppose it was because of my necromancy abilities. They had me doing seances, but I honestly have no idea what I was communing with. My memories were purged every couple days. It's all a blur.”
Umbra furrowed his brow, lapsing into silence. The tattoo that had been on the guard's arm was burned into his mind. There was something going on.
Something was wrong.
He let his eyes fall on his family, talking loudly at each other from across the room and reveling in the festivities. He should have been celebrating too, Umbra knew it. But he couldn't bring himself to. The scars on the right side of his face hadn't stopped aching with past memories.
“I understand. Thank you,” Umbra croaked, dipping his head.
Whatever was happening, he didn't know if it was right to intervene. His family was safe and sound, wasn't that all that mattered?
