Jessalyn walked into the house and closed the door behind Clark. She could smell bacon and realized that she took a lot longer getting back then she planned.
“I’m sorry, Mom!” Jessalyn announced as she walked into the living room. Diana was sprawled on the couch reading a mystery novel and Clark walked up to her and licked her cheek. Diana ran her hand over his head and sat up.
“I only made the bacon. How’s scrambled eggs sound? Maybe some toast?” Diana folded the corner in her book and stood up.
“Sounds like breakfast to me.”
“How was your jog?”
“Good. I helped a little girl get her cat out of a tree and I met this guy that cats don’t like according to him.” Jessalyn laughed.
“Cute?”
“The cat or the guy?” Jessalyn smirked.
“Guy, Jess” Diana chuckled.
“Tall, blonde hair, gray eyes, good build, nice tan, and did I mention gorgeous?”
Diana smiled and asked, “Does he have a name?”
“As a matter of fact he does! Caleb.”
Diana nudged her daughter and walked into the kitchen. She was giving off a weird vibe, but Jessalyn didn’t want to say anything. There was something wrong.
“Hey, Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Are you okay?” Jessalyn asked her. She leaned against the doorway and watched as Diana took eggs and cheese out of the refrigerator.
“I’m great, why?” Diana replied, removing a bowl from the cupboard above the stove.
“You just seem a little different lately that’s all.”
“There’s been some stress at work, but it’s nothing I can’t handle, Jesi.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive, honey.” Diana gave her a warm smile.
“Okay. I’m going to go grab my sketch pad really quick.”
“Food will be done in four minutes.”
“I’ll be right down.”
Jessalyn and Clark climbed the stairs and went into the room she was staying in. She grabbed her notebook and pencil off the desk and then walked to the bathroom. After placing the notebook down, she ran cool water over her face. She stared at her image in the mirror. She looked different. Maybe it was being in California. Maybe it was the worry she felt for her mom. Maybe it was Caleb.
The Hollywood lighting reflected off her earth brown eyes and the bright gold ring around her pupils glittered brightly as if she was casting a powerful spell. She has always loved her eyes because, in her opinion, they were seductive.
She snapped out of it and began brushing out her hair. She applied moisturizer, lightly powdered her face with powder foundation, and added a nude blush to her cheeks. Jessalyn tossed her hair in a clip for the time being, picked up her stuff, and went back downstairs.
She sat down at the kitchen table just as Diana was placing eggs onto two plates. Clark dived into his food dish and Jessalyn started making smooth lines across the paper with her pencil.
“What is my little Monet drawing today?” Diana smiled as she placed a plate down near her daughter.
“Monet did landscapes, Mom. I don’t draw a lot of those. I don’t know what this will turn out to be yet.”
