Jessalyn awoke to A Thousand Years and rolled over toward her night stand. Her clock read eight o’ clock and picked up her ringing phone. The caller I.D read Mica.
“Hey,” she said in a yawn.
“You’re sleeping?” her friend asked her.
“I was until you woke me up.”
She could hear Mica laugh as Jessalyn sat up. She walked out into the hallway and saw that her mom was in her room and the television was on.
Mica has been a close friend of Eden’s since fifth grade when Mica had moved to Seattle from Orlando. She was a bit of a ditz at times, but she was a good person and an even better friend. She was like a Barbie doll with the blonde hair and eyes like little sapphires.
“So, tell me about your trip! How was it? Did you have any crazy monkey sex with a surfer?”
“How the hell was I going to find the time to have sex with my mom around?!” Jessalyn laughed into the phone at her own outburst, as well as Mica’s.
“You can make anything happen if you want it to happen!”
“Yeah, yeah. Anyway, the run was awesome. Plenty of places to explore on foot. We just relaxed and swam. I went to a party that one of mom’s old friends threw. Oh! I also met a guy.”
“You met a guy? Describe!”
Jessalyn giggled as she descended down the staircase.
“Tall, blonde hair, gray eyes, muscular but not overly brawny, sexy voice, smelt incredible like that candle I have. You know, the light brown one called Taboti Safari.”
“Yeah, that one definitely has a manly smell.”
“He also has a woodsy smell to him, but it isn’t overly powerful. He was very nice and just…gorgeous.”
Jessalyn entered the kitchen and went into the refrigerator. She heard Clark’s nails on the tile behind her. She grabbed a bag of premade salad mix and the Italian dressing from the door.
“Does he have a name or should we just call him Mr. Gorgeous?”
“His name’s Caleb. I didn’t get his last name, though.”
“I like it. It sounds dark and mysterious.”
“He’s anything but dark, but a little mysterious. I did kiss him.”
“You kissed him?!?” Mica shouted into the phone.
“I knew you’d react like that” Jessalyn replied with a smirk, taking a bowl out of the cabinet. She emptied some of the salad mix into the dishware and poured the seasoned liquid over the greens.
“A kiss is better than nothing! Was it hot or what?!”
“Yeah, it was hot. He made me breathless.”
“Bitch! See, I want that! I want Luke, but he doesn’t see me that way at all. What’s wrong with me?”
“There’s nothing wrong with you! You put yourself down too much, Mica. When you’re around him, act more positive and don’t laugh at everything he does. You tend to do that.”
“I do, I know.”
“He can tell when you actually think he’s funny or not. Luke’s not an idiot, sweetheart.”
Jessalyn put the food away and sat down at the table. She tossed her salad before sticking a forkful of it in her mouth. Clark rested at her feet, resting his head on her toes.
