It was cold. It was dark. Hannah Jaquille stood motionless on her front porch, gazing out into the night, which was illuminated by a full moon. Her older brother, Kevin Jaquille, hadn't come home from school yet. He usually was driven home by one of his friends' parents, but all of them had reported that their sons hadn't seen Kevin at school that day.
Hannah's mom of course had freaked out, what with calling the police and searching the neighborhood. Hannah, however, didn't join in. Hannah felt foolish to say it out loud, but deep down inside she couldn't help but feel that something had happened to her brother. Something bad. She somehow knew whenever somebody she loved had gotten hurt. She had only told one other person about it, and that was Kevin. At school one day, around noon, she had felt her stomach drop. She came home later to her mother saying through sobs that her father had a heart attack and had died.
But the funny thing was, Hannah had known deep inside that her father was gone. Now, she only felt nauseous. But she was absolutely positive that it had something to do with Kevin. Maybe he's just hurt, Hannah decided. Either way, I know something's not right.
Then it came, out of nowhere.
"Hello, Hannah."
