When Hannah's mom arrived at the house, which was around 9:00 at
night, she looked anything but relieved. "KEVIN AUSTIN JAQUILLE!" She shrieked, hands glued to her hips as she stood impatiently at her car outside.
Hannah rushed out a few seconds later, hissing, "Mom, you'll wake up the neighbors! They already think that we're weirdos when dad died and all those ambulances came." It looked as if Mrs. Jaquille wanted to say something, but before she could even open her mouth, Kevin burst out the front door and strolled right up to his mom. "Oh, hey mom. Where have you been?" He took a big bite of the green apple he had on his right hand and grinned at his sister. No, Hannah mouthed and shook her head, but Mrs. Jaquille was already fuming.
"KEVIN, HOW DARE YOU SCARE ME LIKE THAT? I WAS WORRIED SICK! YOU HAD ME LOOKING ALL OVER TOWN, AND THEN YOU ASK ME WHERE I'VE BEEN?"
Kevin's smile instantly faded, revealing a glare that Hannah had never seen on his face before. Weird, she thought, when suddenly a rustle of leaves came from some of the bushes beside the driveway. Hannah looked to her mom, and then her brother, just to make sure she wasn't imagining it. They looked equally surprised, but Mrs. Jaquille cleared her throat. "Kevin, we'll discuss this inside. C'mon, Hannah." Mrs. Jaquille practically dragged her son into the house, and Hannah was about to follow when she heard somebody call out her name in a raspy voice. "Hannah!"
This is the second time today, she thought to herself. "Who's there?" Her voice cracked in fear, and she cringed. "I have a message for you," the same voice announced. It was obviously a girl's. "You must be careful. They're everywhere, they're... They're taking over. Take shelter, and don't come out under any circumstances. It could mean the difference between life and death." She thought she recognized the voice for a moment, but before she could say anything, there was a rustle of leaves and suddenly the figure was on the other side of the street, running away. When the figure turned back to stare at Hannah, Hannah gasped out loud and ran into her house. Once she had slammed the door, she began panting.
The figure's eyes had the white rings too.
