It’s late afternoon. The sun is about to set and the chill in the air bites Harry’s cheeks.
Normally, he would never go outside in this kind of weather but this is important. This is Louis. Gemma had offered to go with him, but he said he had to do this by himself. She understood.
Harry wanders around in between gravestones covered in flowers and naked trees. A weird contrast. It’s actually very beautiful out here in the orange light from the late sun. Harry settles on a bench under a tree and looks around the lonely graveyard. It’s very quiet.
“Hi there, stranger.” Someone says behind him. He turns around and sees Louis with a big grin on his lips. “Hi.” Harry says quietly while he stands up and places a careful kiss on Louis’ cheek, which is very cold, but Harry doesn’t mind. “Didn’t expect to see you here..” Louis says. “A promise’s a promise.” Harry replies. Louis just nods and starts to smile. He really is pure sunshine, Harry thinks to himself. He really missed that smile.
They start walking, nobody saying anything. They just enjoy each other’s company in the cold winter atmosphere. “So how’s everybody?” Louis asks. Harry takes a deep breath. “It’s hard, you know. We really miss you, Lou.” Harry tears up a little and sniffles but he blames the cold. Louis doesn’t say anything. Instead, he takes Harry’s hand and holds it tight. Louis’ hand is as cold as his cheek, Harry notices.
They pass a small lake. The winter has put its traces upon it with a thin layer of ice.
Harry smiles to himself as he looks at it. “Remember how we met?” He looks at Louis who starts to smile. “Yeah I do. On the ice rink by the city square. I bumped into you, you bought me a cup of hot cocoa and we started talking.” Harry remembers. It was one the best days in his life. “Remember our first date?” Harry teases. “Sure I do! Do you?” Louis teases back. “You called me a few days after our talk by the ice rink and asked if I believed in magic. I really didn’t know what to say, so I just said yes and hoped for the best.” Harry giggles. “And the best was what I got.” He says while stroking Louis’ hand. “Yeah, you really liked my surprise didn’t you?” Harry nods. “Well, let me just say that I never expected to have an entire amusement park opened just for me in the middle of the night.” Louis smiles proudly. “Thank my boss.” He laughs. I’ll remember that, Harry thinks.
They keep walking and soon enough, the sun is gone and it starts to get darker. They stop by a gravestone. Louis let’s go of Harry’s hand and leans against the stone so he faces Harry. He crosses his arms and notices the bouquet of white roses in Harry’s hand. “Those for me?” he asks. Harry hands Louis the flowers with a small smile. “Hope you like them.” “They’re beautiful, thanks Haz.” Louis says, sniffing the flowers. They stand like this for a while before Harry finally says what he’s been holding in. “Can’t you please come back, Lou?” Harry takes a step closer to Louis and grips his hand. Louis’ head drops and he closes his eyes. “Sorry, babe. You know I can’t.” He looks up and sees Harry with tears in his eyes. “You still believe in magic, Harry? After all we’ve been through?” A tear runs down Harry’s cheek. He sends Louis an insecure smile. “Yes I do. Of course I do.” Louis smiles to himself and nods. “Then you have nothing to be worried about.” And by that Louis is gone. All that is left is the stone he leaned on, his name on it and the white roses in front of it. Harry smiles through his tears. “I love you, Lou. See you soon.”
A few days later, their story was in the newspaper. The story of a young couple in love ending tragically by one of them dying in a car accident and the other reuniting them by taking his own life. Instead of a suicide letter, Harry left a small piece of paper in his hand when he past away. On it was written the lyrics from one of his favourite songs.
“Call it magic
Call it true
I call it magic
When I'm with you
And I just got broken
Broken into two
Still I call it magic
When I'm next to you”
