One
Yan He stuffed the last of her binders into the grey-green locker, careful to arrange them in order of her classes the next morning. Algebra first, then two periods of Chorus, Chemistry II, Literature, History, and Japanese.
Ding dong, ding ding
"Come on, Yan He! We're gonna be late!" IA shouted, streaking past in a blur. Her pastel pink and white hair billowed behind her.
"Wait, I need to get my homework!" Yan He replied anxiously. She hastily opened her book bag and stuffed her hand into the mass of paper and pens. Something was missing... something was missing...
"See you tomorrow, Yan He!" cried Rin and Len as they rushed passed her, each of them carrying an identical backpack, though Rin's was white and Len's was black. The two blonde twins shot out the door to where their mother was waiting.
"Bus is leaving!" IA called.
"I know, one moment!"
Yan He looked up into her locker anxiously, scanning the shelves.
"Ah ha!"
She seized her Chemistry II textbook and pushed it roughly into her bag.
"Hurry, hurry!" IA bellowed.
"Coming, coming!"
Yan He zipped up her bag as she sprinted for the frantic IA, who was jumping up and down like a madwoman, causing her loose grey shirt to bounce wildly upon her slender body. Together, the two girls burst through the door of the school. The fine pen-edged lines of the cartoon school shone in the afternoon sunlight, like onyx headbands. The bus stood just a few feet away, looking a bit out of place amongst the "real" landscape just outside the school.
"Wait up!" IA shrieked, stretching her arm out pleadingly.
Unfortunately, the driver did not hear and began to close the doors. But, just before their ticket home had been sealed off completely, Yan He sprang forward like a praying mantis and banged hard on the glass window. Startled, the bus driver threw the lever backwards, sending the doors flying open again. IA squealed and scrambled inside, quickly leaping into the nearest seat available. Yan He stumbled on after her.
"Thanks," she said to the bus driver.
The woman smiled before turning back to the lever and pulling the doors shut for good. Sighing, Yan He scooted past IA and plopped into the window seat. The engine roared to life and the bus began its slow trek away from the vocaloid school.
"Few!" IA groaned, wiping her forehead with the collar of her grey shirt. "That was a close one."
"I know," Yan He smiled. She reached into her book bag and pulled out her white water bottle.
"Hey, where have you guys been?" the chipper blue haired girl Hatsune Miku called from a few seats away.
"Yan He was dawdling by her locker and we almost missed the bus," IA exclaimed in mock-exasperation.
Yan He grinned. Miku and IA laughed.
"OMG, Yan He, have you gotten your acceptance letter yet?" asked Gumi. She was sitting next to the purple-haired boy named Gakupo catty corner behind them.
"No, not yet..."
"Are you excited?"
"I guess."
"I haven't got mine yet, either," Gakupo seconded.
"I did!" Miku shouted joyfully. "I'm going to Zumen High School!"
"That's great!" Yan He told her with a kind smile. "Hopefully I'll be seeing you there."
