It was April 17th when we got a new person at the facility. Her name, Emily Perdue. Her hair flowed down to her mid back, and her eyes were a chocolate brown color.

When she had walked through the door, her bags scattered across the foyer of the dorm, the staff were gathering us up to leave for Rec Therapy. I remember the look of pure terror on the girls face, almost as if she wished the floor would swallow her whole. I smiled, trying to allow her some sort of comfort, although she didn't see it.

When we walked out of the dorm, we headed to the gym. The girl, however, stayed behind, most likely because she had to unpack her bags. I sighed. I wish that we had time to talk, I'd try to make her feel welcome.

When we arrived at the gym, the lot of us stood on the white line separating us from the staff members. Ms. Amanda, the rec therapist, called out for attendance as we all stood silently, awaiting for the group to begin.

I looked down, wanting to do something other than physical activity. I looked to the door and back at the therapist, the only thing on my mind being the girl at the dorm.

My mind drifted to what her personality would be like. I wondered if she was nice. Or maybe shy. I'd have to change that.

After roll call, we were split into two teams to play basket ball, one of my least favorite sport of all time. I turned to Ms. Amanda, practically begging for her to let me sit out.

After a sigh, she nodded her head, motioning to the wall. I grinned sheepishly, walking over with a little skip, and slid down the wall, ignoring the chill of the wall going through my sweatshirt.

Ten minutes into the session, the door to the gym opened, the girl from the dorm walking in with the staff member named Ms. Ray. Ms. Amanda looked to them, pointing over at me.

"Just go sit over there, hun," She said.

I straightened my back, and took a deep breath, wanting to make a good impression. When she sat down, I looked at her.

"Hey... I'm Ashton." The girl looked at me, her brown orbs meeting my green ones. We held a stare that lasted for about ten seconds, but it was broken after she looked down at her lap.

"Emily..." She whispered, and I almost missed it. I studied her faced. Her eyes were a bit red, more likely than not from crying. Her cheeks were flushed, and her lips formed a pout of some sort.

"Look, I know that being here is bad and all, but after a while, you get use to it. I don't know what you're here for, but you've got a friend. At that friend is me. "

Emily turned to me, a gentle smile caressing her face. It was then that I realized that I could do some good in the world. I had made this girl smile. I didn't think that I could with only three sentences. But I guess it is possible.

After the session was over, and we had gone back to the dorms, we washed up for dinner. I lined up with my new friend Emily, and stood, quietly.

The ladies at the cafe served us some brown meat and potatoes. I saw Emily grimace at the look of the food. Leaning over, I whispered in her ear.

"It tastes better than it looks."

That night, when we had gone to sleep, all I could think about is the beautiful small smile that had painted itself on the girls face, and made her eyes light up.
