Things Hortensia and her mother brought to
America: Señora Ortega brought two extra pairs of clothes, some good shoes, one hair pin, a picture of Señor Ortega and his ashes in a neckless, and some money. Hortensia brought two extra dresses, one shirt, one short skirt, a good pair of shoes, sunflower seeds, ribbons for her hair, and a book her Papa gave her.

Back story: Her father was the owner of El Rancho de los Girasoles. Hortensia's father died when she was 8. For three years they where able to fake that her father was sick in bed. On the eve of the fourth year someone found out he was dead.

Lucky for Hortensia's Mother , Esméralda, they had changed the Señor Ortega's will to have Señor Alden Rodríguez, Esméralda's brother, as the person to inherit the Ranch. They where able to live there for 5 years before Hortensia's uncle said her Mama had to marry him or life would be hell for them. Right than Hortensia's Mama knew the had to leave.

You and Hortensia had grown up together even though your family served her's. Your mother had taken care of her ever since she was a baby. Your father had been Señor Ortega's right hand man when he was alive so your familys where very close. When your parents heard that the land was being take they planed to move to America where your Father's brother and his family lived and worked in camp for Mexican farm workers.

Your parents decided it was best to take Hortensia, her Mama and her Abuelita. When you an Hortensia where growing up you where close. You said you would marry her one day back when you where 9 and she was 8. Hortensia had said "We stand one two different sides of a river" and you had but you where hopping that being in the same class would change that.

Scenario 1: Your family and the Ortega's have just arrived at the train station where your Father's brother, Diego, was waiting with his wife and three kids, Marta age twelve and the twins Emily and Edwardo age 2.

Scenario 2: Your family and the Ortega's have been at the camp for two months now. You, Your father, and your Uncle work in the fields harvesting what ever is in season. Señora Ortega had gotten sick yesterday and Hortensia planed on starting to work in the fields tomorrow.

Your father has a house and his brother has a house. Hortensia, Señora Ortega, your Mama, your Tia Josafina and Emily sleep in one house and You, your Papa, your Tio Diego and Edwardo sleep in the other but you all had dinner in the women's house.

Hortensia was cooking when you got home she had Emily on her hip while Edwardo was playing on the floor with so wooden blocks. Your Mama and your Tia Josafina where outside gossiping with other women. Señora Ortega was in bed from her illness.
