Sweat is smeared all over my face. I wake up hot and sweaty. My nightmare replays again and again, my sister being taken. What will they do to her? Will I ever see her again? A thousand thoughts rain through my head. I walk down the short hallway into the family room.

"Mom?" I ask. Without knowing where she is.

She clears her throat. My attention falls on her. On our twig brown love seat, she sits by our large window in our small apartment. Lights hang like dead trees along the street, I can see soldiers patrolling the roads. In the light of the moon, a single tear falls from her eye.

"Yes?" she clears her throat again.

Whispering I ask "what will happen to-"

She cuts me off. She pulls a piece of paper from a pocket in her brown towel like robe. My mother scoots over on the couch and lights a small candle on the side table. On the piece of paper " Sara now coffee. Instead of saying Sara, exchange her name for Coffee." She nods at me. I don't understand, but I try it out anyway.

"Where has the coffee gone? Will it ever be back? Why is it gone?" I asked, as if needing for approval.

"Too obvious." She hushes.

She takes out a pen and writes on the piece of paper " Sara- tea or pastries"

"Ok." She nods again.
