"What the hell are you doing? It's 5 in the morning! You're gonna wake up the whole neighborhood!"

"Oh, shut up and get in the car, why don't 'cha!"

"Well quit the honkin' and I will! And let me grab my shoes!"

"And leave a note! We'll be a few hours!"

"Cool it, Gideon! I'm goin'!"

Alex closed the window to his and his brother's room and dug into his closet to find a bag to throw his clothes in. With his brother absent from home he had quite an idea as to what his friend was planning. He packed the nicest clothes he had, some pajamas, and some casual clothes along with his work outfit, covered in paint stains and spots of oil. He heard a soft knock on his window after he latched his suitcase closed.

"For Christ sake Gideon, have you no patience?" Alex asked after cracking open the window. Mitchell smiled at him and shook his head.

"Nope. Hand me your bag and I'll put it in the trunk. And hurry up with that note! We've gotta get going!" he replied, his voice slightly hushed and his words quick. Alex sighed and handed his suitcase to his friend, who took it from his hands and ran back to his car to load it into the trunk.

His handwriting was atrocious, but his friend was right. They did have to hurry. A quick trip to the kitchen to leave the note, and then out to Mitchell's car to jump in and hit the road.

The summer of 1954 was almost over, and they weren't about to waste what was left of it.
