"Mommy wake up. I had a bad dream" Kyla whined as she tried to shake Me up.
I had a bad headache and she was making it No better. I opened my eyes slowly and yawned as I sat up in bed. I picked Kyla's small body up and scooted back so she could lay in front of me. She slid under the covers and curled up in a ball next to Me like always.
"Baby girl What happened this time? " I question, slowly stroking her hair.
"The bad mostew twied to eat Me again" she sniffed.
I wiped the tear that was slowly falling down her face and kissed her forehead.
"Ky remember What I told you, there is No such thing as monsters. They are only in your brain. They will not hurt you. If they do, I'll beat them down just for you."
"What you do to fem (them)?" She was always so curious about every little thing.
"I'll tickle them like this" I tickled her stomach and watched her giggle, "Then I'll chase them away so they will never get you again Okay?"
"Otay. I wuv you Mommy " she kissed my chin and drifted to sleep.
"Always and forever baby girl" I watched her sleep for a while then fell asleep myself.
*Next Day*
I was awakened by my alarm clock ringing it's head off. I slid my unlock key to stop the loud noise and slowly sat up. Damn it's early. I remembered that Kyla was still in bed so I slowly slid out trying not to wake her.
Once I was on my feet I walked to my drawer in my small apartment and got out some sweat pants to go over my boy shorts. I need to check the mail. Hopefully I get a letter back from the job I applied for. I've been unemployed ever since I got out of college which was 5 months ago. I wanted to become a nurse but all the hospitals I applied for turned me down. Which basically means I'm broke. My refrigerator is half empty, I barely have any clothes, and most of the money I do have goes to my little girl Kyla. She's three. I used to be a little wild so once I found out I was pregnant at 17, the boy I was with left me for my sister Erica. She hates me and I hate her. We've never agreed on anything. I don't know where my daughter's father is, but I'm pretty sure he's still with my sister. That bitch.
I walked outside and down the steps to my mailbox next to all the others. I scanned over the mail and noticed the letter from the leasing office. Oh Shit.
EVICTION NOTICE
We are very sorry to inform you, Ms. Davis, that you are being evicted. Your rent has been past due for several months. Unless you can pay the balance of $1200 by this Friday, you will be put out. You have 3 days after that period to move. Once again we are very sorry.
A tear rolled down my cheek as I brought the papers inside. I don't have that kind of money. Where will I go? How will I survive? I slammed the door shut and slid to the ground putting my hands on my head. I cried softly making sure I wasn't too loud so I wouldn't wake Ky. What was I going to do? After crying for a while I heard small footsteps coming down the hall. I quickly wiped my tears and stood up from the floor. I threw the papers in the trash and opened the fridge to find something to cook.
"Hi mommy" Kyla's small sleepy voice made me smile.
She wrapped her arms around my leg and clung to it. "I hungwy".
I picked her up and kissed her forehead.
"How about you help mommy cook this morning" in reply, she smiled.
I handed her two eggs and put the bowl on the table. I cracked the eggs for her and she grabbed the salt and pepper. For her age, she was an extremely smart child. She already knew all her numbers, shapes, colors, alphabet, the ingredients for making eggs and toast. Plus she knew how to write her name and is trying to read. I hope by the time she gets in Pre-K, she will already be ahead of the class and hopefully be able to skip to kindergarten.
As I watched my beautiful baby girl scramble eggs I wondered, how will we survive.
