Chapter 1
-
Everything was quiet and felt as if time was standing still. The pain in the palms of my hands from falling backwards on the pavement, was the only thing letting me know that this was, indeed, reality. That it was not just my mind playing cruel games with me.
That black cat who crossed my path, that I waved and said hello to. Did in fact turn into a man and waved back. But not just any man, a hauntingly beautiful man.
I must be going mad.
A sweet voice danced with the wind, as this beautiful man walked over to me, extending his long and thin hand out towards me. Modeling that haunting but intriguing smile, that made me want to learn more." I'm sorry if I frightened you, Carmen."
He knew my name?
My eyes that were once locked onto his bright green eyes, trailed their way down to the hand that was still extended out towards me. I began to study; still trying to process everything that was happening. His skin looked pale and soft, his fingers long and thin, his nails even longer and claw like, with a painting of black around the nail wall. As if he was digging through the blackest of soils.
"I won't hurt you."
My eyes shot back up to meet his, though his features were shocking, there was a warmth about him.
My dry tongue flicked against the back of my teeth as I tried to speak. I did not realize that this whole time, I have had my mouth open, leaving it to feel like a desert. After a second attempt, my words finally came out, "w-who are you?"
His fingers twitched slightly as he gestured his hand out towards me more; this time taking it out of politeness, I was pulled up to my feet. His skin was soft... and cold... very cold. He stood much taller than myself, as to be expected with his figure. Still, all I could find myself to be able to do within this moment was to stare at him.
"Nicholas."
I came back to reality once more as he spoke. Shaking the left over fog out of my head, I was able to realize that I had just received a name. "W-what was that? Nicholas?"
That smile appeared softer as he nodded to my questions, "yes, I go by the name Nicholas. It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Carmen."
My tongue moved faster than my mind, as my response came out as a mess of words. "How the hell do you know who I am? How the hell were you a cat!? I must be dreaming! This can't be real!" I grabbed onto the sides of my head, in fear that it would really start spinning from all these thoughts racing though my head.
"They didn't tell you?"
I allowed myself a moment till my head felt like it stopped spinning before looking up at Nicholas. He stood there, hand holding his chin, head tilted to the side as he waited for my response. "Did who tell me what?" Only from a subtle question did I feel my head start to spin again.
His eyebrows rose from my response. "The wise ones. They were suppose to come to you in a dream and tell you about your destiny."
I didn't know I could me more confused than before, but boy was I one confused mess now.
"No one has talked to me and I haven't had any dreams."
Nicholas let out a long sigh, dropping his arms to his sides as he slouched his shoulders, "well shit, I shouldn't even be talking to you then."
The air around and the whole demeanor of this man changed within that one sigh. The threatening, yet intriguing feelingvanished, and all that was left was an annoyed young man, who now seemed like he could care less about the whole situation.
