I think that I managed to quite successfully avoid Harry the entire week, Monday until Friday evening, without raising any suspicions. I told him that despite my parents telling me I did not have to do any work this summer, they needed me to hustle around with some office stuff for just this week.

When Harry suggested that he sneak in at night, I “regretfully” told, or rather texted, him that I did not want him to get caught or that I was too tired. Neither of my parents brought up the fact that I had not gone out to see Harry or brought him over since the unsuccessful dinner.

When I slipped out Friday evening for the “game” Harry invited me to, my stomach was in knots and my palms sweating. I was undeniably nervous to see Harry after talking with my father the past Sunday.

I convinced Harry a bullshit excuse that he should warm up as well as be with his team instead of coming to pick me up.

I must have been the last one at the park because the parking lot was quiet and empty. The buzz of voices grew louder as I crept up to the floodlight lit, makeshift soccer pitch.

There was an apparent underlying tension in the calm atmosphere. It was clear that the rivalry between USC and UCLA ran deep; the partition among those who were supporting one team was physical as students stood on opposite ends. I made out Harry’s curly brown hair on the edge of his team’s huddle.

I spotted Lisa a few feet by him, her body angled to the conversation he was carrying with his teammates. I heard her high laugh and fought down the monster inside me, one which reared its fangs when she touched Harry’s shoulder.

I was torn between slipping into the UCLA fan crowd or making my presence known to Harry, and Lisa. Austin waved at me before I could slide by unnoticed. I felt even more out of my element, especially as I was the only girl in pants and a simple shirt. Harry turned with a frown but his eyes lit up when he saw me.

He unnecessarily waved me over while also walking to me.

            “Hey-“

Harry cut me off abruptly with a kiss, his arms holding me tight and close. His lips moved slowly with mine before he pulled away.

I wanted more; a week was too long and my worries dissipated when Harry was near. My mind did not care that we were in front of so many people, people who were now wolf-whistling at us.

“Hey gorgeous,” Harry said. His voice was rough and deep, the smirk on his lips deep.

            “Hi,” I squeaked.

“Thanks for being here,” he said sincerely, keeping his arm around my shoulder and walking me towards the crowds.

“Thanks for asking me to come,” I replied lamely.

“I’ll always make sure you come, whenever you ask,” Harry quipped with a dangerous grin. My face flushed and I ducked it into his clean white tank. I felt his shoulders shake as his laugh was lost into the resuming noise of the group. I noticed that Harry steered us clear of Austin, Lisa, and the rest of his team. And for that, I was grateful. If I had to deal with whatever would probably have happened with Lisa and Austin, I just might lose it. Once more I was on edge with Harry when my father’s words crept back into my head.

Raj, Jake, Stuart, and Drew were uneasily standing by the edge of the throng or people, looking extremely out of place. My rapidly beating heart slowed when I saw their familiar faces. I was worried that I would not have anyone to sit by. All of the people in the world would have to be dead before I thought about sitting by Lisa, given that she was the only other person that I knew.
