I stood over the sink watching as the black dye spilled out from my hair. I heard the door being quietly knocked on, followed by Viktor's anxious, but hushed tone. "Ace, hurry up, we have to go now," Before answering him, I got one last glimpse at myself through the bathroom mirror, and I could hardly recognize myself, my once white blonde hair was now jet black, which made all the difference. I wonder what Viktor looks like now.
"Shh, Viktor I'm coming," I replied keeping as quiet as I could. I walked out of the bathroom and saw Viktor standing outside the door looking frantically around. My eyes widened at the sight of his appearence. Viktor, who used to have shoulder length, curly brown hair, had completely shaved his head. "Wow, Viktor-"
"Shh," he yanked me away from the bathroom, and we walked through the public park. We had no place to hide yet, and it was 11:15 p.m.
"Where are we going?" I whispered. Neither of us had a car to at least stay the night in.
"The train," he responded. Through the most important situations, nothing is ever explained to me. And he gets annoyed if I ask ''too many questions.'' And that really meant any questions at all. We quickly walked out of the park and headed in the direction to the nearest train station. On the walk, I looked around, knowing this would probably be my last time seeing Basik, our nation's capital, and if I ever did, it would be seeing the prisons of Basik.
I took in the beauty the town had, with cobblestone paths all over town, colorful homes lined up perfectly beside each other, each having a completely different exterior design than all the others. Cozy, and perfectly sized, each being decorated with gardens surrounding each home. This was Ominiski's best town. Not really a city, but plenty of people lived here.
As I admired the town for one last time, a small voice in my head whispered what if we get caught? It's nearly impossible to run forever, I turned to Viktor, who seemed unworried. He was impossibly inhuman. You just don't show him any feelings or worries you might have.
Finally, after what seemed like ages of walking, we reached Basik Central Station. The station was, as usual, busy and bustling with people, left and right. Even in the dead night, this place was incredibly noisy. The bright lights were blinding from being outside in the night. We silently moved in through the station. "So, do you know where we're going to?" I asked. I turned and saw Viktor was all the way right side of the station waving me over furiously. I hurried in his direction.
He yanked me down and hissed, "Stop walking out in the open like that!"
"Why? They don't know who we are," I said.
"We are trying to sneak in, we don't have train tickets."
"Oh, yeah."
"You're fucking dumb, you know," he said. Why the hell do I always give this asshole a chance to call me out. "Seriously, why did I have to be in this situation with you of all people?" His annoying ass continued to press.
"Well you can go on your own then, I'm fine with that," I snapped. He laughed bitterly, which made me want to blow him up.
"Without me, you'd probably just hand yourself into the cops. That's how ignorant you are," he spat back. I was about to say something, but I heard something a bit far in the distance.
"Shh, wait, Viktor, do you hear that?" Viktor paused and listened.
"Yeah..it's the train!" Soon, the enormous train came into view, and it slowed down to a halt. Viktor and I moved closer to the train, staying out of sight. We watched as a large line of people handed their tickets in, and got loaded onto the train. Finally, the long line was done, and the train began slowly moving.
"Okay, let's go!" I called, and as the train began to pick up speed, we ran as fast as we could to the trains side, I shook with fear, I shivered despite the fact it was summer, and the worst thought snaked it's way into my mind, what if I don't make it? But again, Viktor seemed one hundred percent confident.
He glimpsed at me and said, "You ready?" I barely nodded before he shoved me with all his strength to give me a boost, and we threw ourselves onto the nearest car. It was as if I was flying through the air forever. Time seemed frozen, and I didn't have a thought go through my head. Through my anxiety, I was blinded, and had no idea where the car we was, but I closed my eyes, and waited for death.
But instead, I felt a slam into a cold stone wall, though my body was numb. I was in the same spot thinking I had died. My mind was frozen, but once I realized that I could hear my heart pounding, and feel myself breathing, I thought hazily, The car...the car! I flung myself upward into sitting position, breathing heavily, and my heart pounding from the fear of not making it into the car.
The noise of the train's wheels against the train tracks made me feel as though I was going to go deaf, and caused my head to feel as though it was being bashed against a wall repeatedly. At once I regained feeling over my body, and the crash into the wall was really hitting me now, and it was as though I got slammed by a car.
But once I glanced at Viktor who was rummaging through his bag, and not knocked out, I decided to speak to him. "Finally," I panted. "The hard part's over."
I leaned to the wall of the car, waiting for my breathing and heart beat to slow down, and once I got closest to normal I could get, I leaned over to Viktor. "So where are we headed?" I asked my voice still a bit shaky. He looked at me a moment, completely calm, as if no death situation just happened. I smiled slightly, "Seriously," I breathed. "It's like you didn't almost just kill yourself."
He just chuckled, and said, "I'll let you know in the morning. You look like a zombie."
I don't doubt it. I feel like a zombie. I mumbled my thanks, and slumped back to the cold solid side of the car, and before I knew it, I was out cold.
