"Hey, Connor, I was wondering-"
"No." Connor doesn't look away from his computer, where he is completely absorbed in a game of Grand Theft Auto.
His flatmate, Josh, rolls his eyes. "I haven't even asked you anything yet!"
"I know what you're going to ask me, and the answer's still no," Connor insists, refusing to even consider what Josh is about to ask. He doesn't even know why Josh still bothers to try and convince him to do this kind of thing.
"Look, Connor, please, just once-"
Connor reluctantly pauses his game and spins around to face Josh, who has definitely gelled his hair for a night out. "Look, Josh, like I've said a million times before, I don't go out clubbing. You can go ahead and find a one-night-stand by yourself. But don't come back to this flat with a chick if you do find one, I don't want to hear you-"
Josh interrupts Connor before the conversation gets a little too personal. "Mate, I'm not going clubbing. We're going to the massive second-year party to start our second year with a blast."
Connor raises an eyebrow. "Clubs? Parties? What's the difference? I'm not going, either way."
"Yes, you are. Come on, Connor, you can't just keep being a social hermit, hiding in our flat playing video games."
"I'm not a social hermit. I go out with friends a lot of the time. Just not to clubs or parties," Connor replies defensively, although there is a bit of truth to what Josh is saying. But Connor is happy being a social hermit. It means hardly any embarrassment, hardly any awkward fallouts with friends and hardly anything to care about.
"You go out with my friends. Come on, admit it, I'm the only close friend you have."
Being a social hermit also means a lot of loneliness because Connor only has one close friend, but to Josh, Connor isn't the only one there. Josh has loads of friends, and probably knows half the people in his college. Connor's existence probably doesn't matter as much to Josh as Josh's does to him, seeing as if Josh got hit by a car tomorrow or something, Connor would have many problems, seeing as he would be completely alone. As for Josh, if Connor got hit by a car, he would probably be a bit sad but also, he would have other friends to move in with temporarily and spill out all his feelings to.
Then again, Josh was the one who asked Connor if he wanted to move in last year, so Connor probably does matter.
It would be cool if one day, Connor could actually find a girlfriend or something. Maybe he would spend less time worrying about how antisocial he is, and less time worrying about if Josh will move out one day, but more time worrying about keeping up an actual romantic relationship, because he hasn't had one in so long that he doesn't know whether he still knows how to kiss.
"Okay, fine, but it doesn't mean I don't have friends. I'm still pretty good friends with your friends. And I plan to make my future friends in places that aren't clubs or parties, because like I said, I don't go to clubs or parties." Connor prepares to swivel back around to his computer on his chair, but Josh grabs the chair before he can.
"Face it, there's not many people like you who refuse to go to clubs or parties. Where do you even plan to meet people if not in clubs or parties?"
