We've been on the road for a few hours now, and all that has happened is one bathroom break where we all bought way too many packs of skittles and beef jerky.
The arrangement in the car is as follows; my mom driving, Shaylee in the passenger seat, Ashton and Myles in the next row, Tiran and I in the back. My mom and Shaylee have been talking the entire time and that plus the sound of the car on the road is making me drift off.
My head starts bobbing and I realize that I'm falling asleep already, though it's only about 9pm. I lean over to the window and shut my eyes, listening to the sounds all around me. I try to listen in on the conversations going on but it's hard because I'm so tried.
"Hey," Tiran whispers. "That doesn't look too comfy. You can lean on me if you want. I'm not gonna bite."
I laugh softly and lean over to Tiran, who puts his arm around me. He's always been like a brother to me. I've known him since I was about 5, when we moved to Washington. He's a muscular guy. Not necessarily buff, though you can tell he works out. When I'm with Tiron I always feel safe. I know he can protect me if anything happens.
I fall asleep thinking about the first time he and I met, feeling like it was yesterday.
Moving had always been my least favorite thing. In my mere 5 years of living we had moved three times. I don't know why, but it happened. Every time it made me sad because that meant having to make new friends. Friends are hard for me. You'd think that at 5 everyone would be considered a friend, but no. I choose friends carefully. As we drive up to our new house, I begin imagining what my room will be like. Pink, I think. I love pink. I look out of the window to my left and see a really pretty garden. It has flowers everywhere. Blue, pink, purple, and bushes on the edges. I get out of the car to explore our new home. As I walk up to the door, I hear someone whistling to my left. It's a boy. Boys are weird. They're always getting dirty and hitting each other for fun! I walk over to him and he smiles at me. Weird.
"Hi." I say
"Hey" he says back.
"I can't whistle yet." I tell him
"I just learned how to. It's easy. I can try to teach you sometime."
"Okay. My name's Kamryn. What's yours?" I ask him
"Tiran." He responds, grinning.
"Hm. Weird name. Anyway, bye. I have to go help mom unpack. Cya" I say, turning to leave.
"Bye." He says.
That's how we became friends. Nothing spectacular. Nothing extremely witty for 5 year olds. We just... said hi.I wake to the sound of the car door closing and Tiran talking to me.
"Hey, Kam, we stopped at a hotel for the night. Get up."
"Okay okay jeez. That eager to get rid of me, huh?" I ask, grinning.
"Shut up and get up" he says, laughing.I like his laugh. It's not deep and husky like you'd expect, but more of a boyish laugh. His voice has dropped but his laugh hasn't and I like it.
I stand up and get out of the car, stretching my legs. We all walk to the hotel for our first night of the trip. I end up in a room with Shaylee and we talk for a while but eventually go to sleep. So far, the trip is going great.
