The brothers Grimm were the wordsmiths behind the original fairytales that you all know and enjoy. However, as their surname suggests, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's versions of the "true love" tales you're accustomed to are rather... well, grim.
The stories you heard as a child are the sugar-coated rendition of the fables that these brothers wrote. Here you'll find the original tales of well-knowns such as Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and Rose Red, Cinderella, and many others. Also, there are many stories that most have never heard of unless your parents were extreme fanatics about fairytales. Some of these include Bluebeard, Rumpelstilzchen (Rumplestiltskin), Bearskin, and my own personal favorite from childhood, Myriadafura.
However, I'm afraid that these fables contain few (if any, depending on your point of view) happily-ever-afters. Sorry.
I hope these stories don't haunt your dreams like they do to some (and as they were meant to do to the children of their time).
Revel at your own risk.
