I twiddle my purple pencil around my fingers in 8th period. My palm holding up my pale chin and my eyes locked on the back of Terin's head. His brown hair was perfectly cut around the bottom of his neck. Not one hair too long, not one too short. They were all aligned in order. One longer strand of blonde highlight from the top had fell to the back of his head away from the rest of his perfectly put together hair...well...almost perfect. No one is perfect. That hair is the only thing stopping him from becoming that.
I got lost staring at the little hairs on his head. A perfect shade of brown with small pieces of blonde that drew even more attention to him then before. I began to count the longs ones that I could see in front of me. 1...2...3. Every time he bent his head down to take notes, I had to focus on that one hair that I had counted. Until his head bounced back up to the teacher. 8...9...10. My head tilted with his and the words from the teacher slowly became into mumbles and then into a quiet roar. 23...24...25. It felt almost like a trance. His motions were so smooth a slick. His shoulder blades spread out his gray polo out in the back leaving 19 long and short wrinkles in his shirt. 3 more than normal with that shirt. 39...40...41. "Miss Canvase!" Mr.Paton spoke with a loud voice.
His ruler smacked down onto my desk next to my shoulder causing me to jolt slightly to the side away from the noise. A few of my classmates giggled at me including Terin. I could feel my heart raise in my chest under my sweatshirt. "Yes?" I replied.
I saw Terin's head turn around out of the corner of my eye to look at the scene. I quickly glanced at him to make sure he didn't just shift a bit. His long dark lashes stood out making it almost impossible to look away from his sparkling eyes. But I couldn't just stare at him again when everyone was watching. "The Earth has currents which is what causes..." Mr.Paton's voice trailed off for my answer.
"Different temps at the same distance away from the equator based on the current temperature," I explained staring down at the ground to keep my thoughts in order.
"Good enough," he said walking back to his spot to continue his lecture.
Terin turned a bit more so he was facing me. I looked up ahead so we made eye contact as I shuffle back to my former position. My back hunched over my desk and my arms crossed below my head. My long dark brown hair dangled down in front of my left eye. His sparkly dark teal eyes looked back into mine and the longer fluffy part of his hair hung down over his forehead. "Little does this buffoon know we learned all this stuff in 6th grade," Terin whispered.
His slim face painted on a slim pretty smile that covered his face. I loved his teeth for some reason. He had two top teeth that looked slightly fangy but bright white that could blind you with one grin. "He's old get over it," I responded with a slight smile.
"You would think he would at least look at the textbooks once," Terin went on, tilted his head to his right and raising the matching shoulder.
"He's just making sure we remember."
"Oh Vale," he smirked."I can't think of a time you didn't look at the good side of a horrible teacher."
Terin turned around to face the front again and adjusted in his seat before we got caught. His words flew around in my head like birds in the blue skies. The sound of his slightly low voice echoed in my ears without actually making a real noise. I thought about the beautiful shade of blue and green his eyes had and his small dots on his cheeks. I looked up at the clock to the left that was nailed into the white bricked wall. 3:02 5 more minutes until study hall. 3 more minutes until deciding if I should ask Terin to study with me. 2 more minutes until I get Erica's opinion and see what she thinks I should do. Mr.Paton's small over timer rang on his desk. The sound shoving it's way through my brain. Plowing through the sides of my head until he rushed over to grab it and turn it off. "Class is dismissed," he spoke.
Everyone's clothing made that speedy shuffling noise to grab their binders and of course, like every few days, I rolled my pencil under Terin's chair so he could give it to me as an excuse to talk to me. He grabbed my pencil next to his black shoes and then his binder. We both stood up at the same time and pushed our chairs under the desk. He turned around and unrolled his fingers from his palm and held the pencil out on the edge of his hand. He tucked his lips and teetered back and fourth from his heels to his toes. "I feel like you drop your pencils a lot," he told me.
" I guess I don't have sticky fingers like most people," I replied with a rattling voice.
"That would be gross if you had sticky fingers."
I grabbed the pencil from his hand and pushed it into my binders pocket. "That was a joke saying you have sticky fingers," I explained awkwardly.
Terin raised one eyebrow and stuck out his bottom lip."I don't have sticky fingers," he assured.
We started to slowly walk out of the already empty classroom. "Then how could you not drop your pencil?" I laughed, "Sticky fingers. That's the only explanation."
He grabbed my right wrist with his left hand and lifted it in the air so we could both see it. His fingers were wrapped tightly around my thick black sweatshirt but it didn't hurt. He held my hand with his right while still grabbing onto my wrist. His nail bed were so perfect . He had absolutely no hang nails and the beds went far back making them look long and pretty. I wish I had his nails, it would be an upgrade from my stubs. His hand didn't feel super cold or warm like it would get sweaty. It felt nice, soft. I felt my heart flutter in my chest and time seemed to move faster every second more that his tan smooth hand held onto my pale fingers. He let go and I kept my hand in the air in the same position, trying to keep my jaw from drooping. I didn't know what to do except stand there and react. "Not sticky at all," he chuckled.
I heard one of his friends call his name from outside the classroom door by the lockers. He dashed out of the hallway and left me in the room alone. He turned back to me and gave me a small smile. My heart slowed down into a slow beat that filled my chest. My cheeks couldn't help but raise into a close mouthed smile as he turned to his friends I kept my hand in the air where he left it. My mouth hung open just a smidge and I couldn't take my eyes off him as he laughed with his buddies in the lockers. They all bumped each other with their shoulders as they opened and closed their lockers and caught up since last period. His nose scrunched up when he smile too hard which always happened when he was around his guy friends. Ive always wanted to make his nose scrunch like that sometime.
