When we got into the classroom, Terin went to sit by a bookshelf towards the front of the room. The shelfs curved around the circular table he sat at. It gave off a sort of private feeling because unlike the other tables, everyone can hear you and see your work. The teacher sat at her desk on the far side of him with her headphones stuck in her ears. "You know the drill," she spoke. "Homework first and then whatever else just be quiet."
I looked around for an open seat while standing about 10 feet away from Terin, awkwardly biting the inside of my lip and my hands in a shaky fist. "Vale!" I heard a small whisper.
I looked around to see who was calling my name. My eyes stopped on Terin who was standing up a bit in his seat with one hand on the tan table and the other waving me over. "Come sit with me," he whispered.
I adjusted the stuff in my hands and waddled over to Terin. He rested back into his seat and gave me a small smile as I sat down next to him in the circle table. I waved at him once I sat down. He waved back and we both laughed at our awkwardness. "I don't think my homework should take too long now that I look at it," he told me.
"Alright," I knodded opening up my notebook.
I knew the plot for the English story had to be something with betrayal and also had to be a short story so about 3-6 pages. I started jotting down ideas for our writing just to get a head start. Relationship betrayal, friendship betrayal, family betrayal... anything?About 30 minutes went by giving me 20 minutes left until school ended and my note book was filled with a couple of ideas for our writing and a bunch of small flower doodles. My hands started to hurt from fiddling with my pencil. Terin had been tapping at the table with his pencil for a few minutes with his fist holding up his head by his templets. "Do you need help?" I finally asked.
"Well, I'm almost done I just don't know how to 'find the area of an octagon' so," he explained shrugging.
"Each triangle makes 180 degrees so draw triangles with the sides. So three sides on each like this and all go out from the same corner. Like this," I explained.
I started to draw on the octagon the paper with my left hand because my right was too far from his paper to reach. My hand was shaky so the lines didn't turn out the best. But, it was still obvious what I was trying to do. "Oh," Terin replied still kinda confused. "But what's the area?"
"There are 6 triangles so take 180 and multiple it by 6."
A little sparkle in his eye appeared when he finally got full clarity on what I was trying to say. "1080."
I nodded and his quickly turned to his paper and wrote down what I explained to him and sketched down what I explained. He turned the paper with the tips of his fingers so I could look over it. I quickly scanned over the paper to make everything was correct. "Looks right," I spoke.
He flipped the paper back towards him and placed it between his dark blue notebook. The top of it stuck out and wrinkled at the corners. "Nerd," he whispered.
I smiled then quietly sneered,"'I'm not a nerd!"
He tilted his head towards to me, raised his brows, puffed out his cheeks, and flattened his lips. "I'm just smart," I claimed.
He chuckled with his eyes squinted and adjusted himself to sit in a normal position. "I guess."
I looked to my paper and did a small twirl with my pencil around my fingers. "What ideas do you have for 'betrayal'?" He asked.
"Relationships, friends and family. Basic things everyone else is gonna do," I explained.
I saw his shoulders sink along with his eyebrows and bottom lip."I don't want our paper to be like everyone else's."
"What ideas do you have?"
"You're the creative writer hear. I thought you'd teach me."
"Give you brain a try."
He leaned back in his chair and rested his chin in his left hand which was held up with his right arm. He let out a long sigh through his lips while looking up at the ceiling. He teetered on his chair with his long legs under the table. He started to swing backwards a little far and it kinda made me nervous. "Careful," I told him.
"Ok Mom," he laughed looking out the right side of his eyes to glare at me.
He continued his rocking the metal chair with the maroon plastic top. "I got an idea," he announced.
Instantly right after the metal slipped from under his chair and his back stayed upward as his knees dug into his chest and arms flailed in the air to grab the table. His long finger latched onto the slippery tan wood. His giggle sounded like breaths and wheezing and his eyes did the cute little squints that made his nose scrunched up. I looked around to see if the teacher was looking but her desk was too far away from our table to hear anything. "Help me!" Terin cried quietly laughing.
I got out of my seat and grabbed onto his hands before the chair fell back all the way. I grabbed onto his wrists and yanked him up to the neutral position for the chair. I held onto his hands while we calmed down from all the laughing we had did, which only lasted a few seconds. He pulled his hands back and placed them over his heart to feel the beats. "Thank you," he said.
"No problem," I told him.
I started to laugh again and held my sweatshirt over my mouth to muffle the sounds. Terin let out one more long sigh and said, "What about being betrayed by society? Like deciding to wear a hijab for the first time to school?"
I looked to the side and stared at the floor to think of how we could write that story and if it was a good idea. I played with my bottom lip for a second and rocked back and forth in my seat. I finally looked up at him and my open mouth did a bit of a smile. "Perfect!" I agreed.
Terin nodded really fast in excitement. "And like the person would have been really popular then they aren't but then they find someone excepting and-" his words bundled up so much I could barely understand him.
"Whoa whoa! Slow down turbo!" I laughed putting my hands up to calm him down.
He stopped talking and put his hands on is knees. His chest puffed in and out as he caught all his breath letting out small wheezes of laughter and sighs that turned into words, "I'm so happy you're my partner."
