Both parents answered in union, "Yes my Honey Eyes?"
The young boy giggled, and was soon out of bed. He rushed into his parent's arms, and they instinctively embraced him.
The little once broke away, and then tilted his head to the side and asked in only the way a child may ask, "Mommy, Daddy, I thought you were leaving."
They didn't notice when the deep voice left the room with a few words, "I'll give you kids some privacy,"
Not even a full minute of silence had passed before Lillya broke into tears. Romeo rolled his eyes and sent a scornful look in her direction. Instead, she only grabbed her son by his waist and pulled him into the most emotional hug ever given in her life.
"Mommy, Daddy. Don't worry. I'll be fine." he said, using his already sticky hand to wipe his mother's face, though it only backfired into making her a bubbling mess.
Romeo, on the other hand, was much more composed with this scene. Instead, he merely pulled his son away and shook his hands, but couldn't resist a smile when the toddler returned it with a short nod of the head. And for a brief moment, he almost felt pride.
But that moment soon left when the scantily dressed immature started yelling how much she loved her baby, and didn't want to leave him. They all knew why she couldn't.
"We'll drop him in front of a random house," said Romeo, and did an imitation of dusting his hands, "And then he's out of our hair. Just like in the movies!"
Lillya didn't reply at all, she would only hug her baby and murmur words that no one could catch. Pitiful eyes looked upon her, and her husband could only bite his tongue and look away.
The toddler, too young to know too much, could only try to comfort his mother. But even his pleas had no effect, so he asked her to rock him to sleep. With him slumbering in her arms, she was calm again.
"Wait, in the city," Romeo began, eyes searching the room for appropriate words, "They would trace back the child to the parents- to me! Darn-it!"
Now as much as Lilly loved the idea of having a child, she couldn't risk having anyone else know about this section of her life. So those very words caught her attention.
"What do we do?" she whispered, a trace of fear in her eyes.
Romeo gave her a blank look, and for once he had no answer- not even a snide remark.
"Let me help with that," Matthew said, appearing at the doorway eerily as though he had rehearsed that very line.
Simultaneously they looked at him, and Romeo scoffed, "How on earth are you going to do that?"
Though his wife didn't voice it out, she was wondering the very same thing, albeit in a milder tone.
The older man smirked, as though Matthew knew he had the upper hand this entire time. He glanced at Lillya, and she averted her eyes, guilt resurfacing. Then he looked down at the sleeping child, and one could have believed that he almost felt some emotion.
"Well?" demanded Romeo, folding his hands, "I'm still waiting."
And the Matthew spoke with a mischievous glint in his eyes, "I have sources. Good people who will take the child in. I have people who would help with that."
Romeo snorted, "The only way that is even remotely possible, is for you to be working with police... with police..." he trailed off, jaw slacker than before.
Matthew shoved his hand into his pockets, and pulled out something black, and sent a hard look towards the father. The tension in the atmosphere grew.
Until, it clicked...
The wallet revealed the badge, glinting in the fluorescent lighting.
"Wait," began the father, eyes bulging from their sockets, "You're a cop?"
The sly smirk of the older man gave the family all the answers they needed. But that didn't stop the father from asking more questions.
"WHAT?" shouted the father, jumping back a relative distance, "A cop?!"
The young mother, though shocked, finally put the pieces together. The blood on her husband's clothes; the bag of money; the late nights; the secrecy...
'It all made sense now,' she thought, eyebrows meeting, 'He's an undercover cop...'
Now all she had to do was the calm down her spluttering husband. But her priority was, at the moment, the most important boy in her life. The small child that remained locked in her hands.
And so she spoke up, shocking both the cop and her husband, "How can my baby get to safety?"
For a moment, silence was heard, and now she was the impatient one.
"Girl, all the necessary paper work will be done." he began to explain, with her hanging off his every word, "We can frame it so that the child is from another family."
The father interrupted, "How will all that legal stuff be done?"
The officer smiled almost gently, "There was an accident recently- father and his child. The man was an illegal immigrant from a rural area; not legal residents. So there are ways in the law in which that child would become legalized."
"Where's the child now?" whispered Lillya.
Matthew frowned deeply, "Both died. But no one else knows that. We can make a sacrifice this time... if a certain someone pays for his deeds."
Romeo coughed when it hit him. And he glanced at the boy who was to carry on his bloodline.
Such youth, such innocence...
Romeo looked at Lillya, and he winced.
They could have been a good family, if only he hadn't been so stupid and reckless.
But, if there was ever a time to do the right thing, it would be now.
His son deserved a chance at a life.
Romeo lifted his head, and held out his hands, touching at the wrists, "I'll surrender..."
Lillya gasped, and even Matthew looked baffled.
Romeo continued unfazed, "If you can get my son a normal life,"
Lillya interjected, "You adopt him!"
Both men's head shot to her, mirroring faces of shock.
Then Romeo nodded, and asked with a smirk, "Think ya can handle it Officer?"
Matthew narrowed his eyes, and settled his gaze upon the child again. His features softened, and he nodded.
Then Lillya asked how it would be possible.
And Matthew quickly explained the complicated procedure, not always white in the eyes of the law, but their child would be safe.
And before anything else could be said, the door flew open. Guns made their quiet entrance while Lillya screamed, and perhaps that was what shocked her son out of his slumber.
Honey Eyes looked around the room, and dove deeper into his mother's bosom, which she openly welcomed. All eyes faced the door.
