I smiled at the little girl sitting at the breakfast bar near me. Her bright blue eyes stayed on me and a smile plastered on her face.
Ella was always the happiest little girl. When she was still a little baby she never cried, she only smiled.
"Milk or orange juice with your eggs?" I opened the fridge and turned to my little sister.
"Milk please" she sang.
I grabbed the carton of milk and poured the white liquid into Ella's pink sippy cup. The moment I was done she slides the sippy cup across the counter to her and takes a sip.
I walked out of the kitchen and made my way upstairs. My feet stepped on the dark soft carpet like they did every single morning. It was something I was so used to that it just felt weird without it.
My body took me down the hallway to the first door on the right, my older brothers room. Matthew, Matthew, Matthew. God I loved him and hated him at the same! Was that even possible?
I wrapped my fingers around the door knob and slowly twisted until the door slowly creaked open. From the room came no light but what did was a horrible smell. What could I expect from him? I was gonna have to clean his room once I got back.
"Matt, get up! Dad wants you at work by nine today!" I leaned against the door frame with my arms crossed over my chest.
That was another thing, "work". I never knew much about it but I knew it was very important for some reason. It wasn't your normal job.
Matthew could never get up on time to make it thou. My father and brother were were up all hours of the night drinking with buddies from "work" with some sluts but they didn't know I knew.
My father and brother never wanted me to know anything. They kept everything top secret. It's not that bad just to come out and say " We're going to get a drink with some buddies" once in a while.
"Now!"
"Go away you fat pig!" Matthew threw a pillow across the room at me that I completely dodged and pulled the blankets over his head.
I rolled my eyes with a growl and made my way to the next room. I opened the cran scribbled door to see the most adorable twin boys still fast asleep in their pirate ship beds.
I made my way through their cluttered floor and to their beds. I kneeled down and just admired their sweet little sleeping selves. I used to be like that but times had changed.
"Evan, Ethan. It's time to get up and get ready for school. Breakfast is ready downstairs" I whispered.
Both of their blue eyes popped open immediately. That's what was different about the twins, everyone in our family you had to drag out of bed but these two would be up instantly and ready to start the day.
The boys jumped out of their beds and ran all over the room in their spaceman pjs as I made my way out and back downstairs.
"Give it back!" I heard Ella scream.
I ran the rest of the way down the stairs to find Matthew drinking the last of Ella's milk out of her sippy cup.
"Matthew!" I yelled stomping to my big brother.
"Sorry but I'm running late, had to get something fast" he put the sippy cup down as he gave me a peck on the forehead and ran to the door.
"And who's fault is that?" I raised my brow.
"Yours" he walked out the door with a wave.
I ignored my idiotic brother and turned to Ella and picked up the little girl up in my arms when Evan and Ethan came running down the stairs with their matching backpacks.
"Kaytlyn, we're gonna be late" Ethan whined.
"No we won't, just hurry up and grab your guys breakfast and head to the car" I grabbed the keys off the counter and walked out the door with Ella in my arms.
-----------
"I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom for me and you, and I think what a wonderful world" I sang soft to the slow melody.
I wiped the counter down with a wet rag until it was spotless and then threw it in the sink.
Ella was in the living room watching cartoons, the little guys were at school and the men at work. That's how the days were.
At the age of thirteen I took over the mother role in the family. I cooked, I cleaned and I took care of my grief stricken family. I made sure everyone was okay but never ever made sure I was.....
That was my everyday life, and I guess I was fine with it. I had everything I thought I needed.
"Ella, I think it's time for your nap" I walked into the living room with a small smile.
Ella hopped off the couch and into my arms. I walked up the stairs to our room with my little girl in my arms.
Once I made it into our bright pink bedroom I laid her down on her princess bed. I pulled the covers over her tiny body and she welcomed them with embrace.
"Dream big, princess" I laid a small kiss on her forehead.
"Love you, Kaytlyn" she closed her eyes.
"I love you too" I made my way out of the room and closed the door softly.
Sometimes my little sister was the only thing that kept me going. She was the sunshine in my dark world, I needed her and didn't know what I would do without her.
I turned around quietly to go back downstairs when I saw something that wanted to make me scream but before a sound could leave my lips a large filthy hand covered my mouth.
In front of me we're to huge very scary looking men. They wore all black with civil chains around their necks. Guns lined their belt loops with scowls on the men's lips.
"Now be quiet and we don't plan on hurting you to bad, Luca doesn't want it that way but we promise we'll hurt your little sister if you don't behave" a thick Italian accent left the grey haired mans lips.
I was in complete shock. I didn't know what to do, my head was jumping to a million ways this could go down and always the worst came in first.
"Will you behave yourself?" the dark headed man asked.
I nodded.
He removed his hands from my mouth and I stayed silent. There was nothing else I could do. If I made a wrong move they would do something to my little sister, I couldn't let anything happen to her.
"Giovane donna, if you come with us quietly no one will get hurt but if you don't your sister is shot dead and you get a very bad flesh wound" the grey haired man wrapped his fingers around the gun in his belt loop.
"I'll....go with you. No one has to get hurt" I hung my head.
"Good" they both smirked at each other.
"But I can't leave my sister alone" I spoke up with fear.
"Don't worry, as soon as we're out the door your Papa and brother will be here in no time" one of them chuckled as both of them grabbed me by my elbows.
