Chapter 7

"You mean that?" Farlin said in shock. "You want me to marry you?"
"Well I don't want to" Emmeline scowled. "But you canceled my engagement and I have to be married before I'm crowned Queen" she stood up and coughed into her hand. "I've already made the arrangements, if you say no I'll marry a stable boy or a Stewart. I will be Queen"
Its too good to be true! Farlin thought. "I am pleased you chose me" he said. "I would be honored to marry you"
"Very well then" she waved her hand. "Get out before you get sick. The wedding is in three weeks"
Farlin left the room still in shock. This was too good to be true! She asked him, him!
On the other side of the door Emmeline was smiling. "I told you he wants to be king" she said.
Lord Earie came out from behind her dressing screen. "He didn't believe his luck"
"You have secured your side of the arrangement?" The Princess asked.
"Yes" he said. "All there is left to do is spin the wheel"

Chapter 8

Killy woke up to someone placing a hand over his mouth. He immediately reached for the dagger under his pillow before the dim candle threw a light on Fiona's face and he relaxed.
"What are you doing in here?" He asked. He started sitting up before realizing he was naked and stopped. Fiona put the candle on his nightstand and sat on the bed beside him. "What if someone saw you? What would they think?"
"I stole three hundred slaves from under an entire army's nose" she replied. "I know how to be discrete"
"What are you doing here?" Killy asked.
"I said I'd tell you what the fuss over Aries was tonight" she said.
"Couldn't that have waited?" He asked.
"Fine" Fiona shrugged. She picked up her candle but Killian caught her arm.
"Well I'm up now" he said. "You might as well tell me" Fiona sat back down. "What are you wearing?"
"Its a nightshirt" Fiona said.
"You probably should have put something else on" he said. The nightshirt only went down to her thighs. "Go on, tell me"
"Have you met the Wolf?" She asked. He shook his head. "According to Flint, Sir Horace was asked personally by the King to bring me back to the capital alive. Sir Horace confirmed this tonight at dinner, he told me Marius brought him here on the kings order so he could capture me. So being the drama king Flint is, he killed two horses getting here to tell me and the scene with Aries was him making up an excuse to get me away from Marius to tell me"
"The Wolf" Killy said. "Why did he tell you? He just gave himself away"
"That's what I can't understand" Fiona said. "I think he was trying to warn me"
"Or scare you into leaving tonight" Killy said. "He probably planned to wait on the side of the road somewhere and get you while you road by"
"Well if that's so" Fiona said. "He's spending the night out in the cold waiting for me and I'm having a nice chat with you where it's warm, so jokes on him" she picked up her candle. "Sorry for waking you, but I didn't think I'd get another chance to tell you before Flint started posting guards at my door" she started to leave but Killy pulled her back.
"Stay a moment" he said, he didn't know why he wanted her to stay, but she didn't seem to mind. She put the candle back down and sat down on the bed next to him.
"What are you thinking?" She asked.
Killy shook his head. "I don't know, you can go if you want, I don't know why I called you back"
Fiona shrugged. "I can't sleep anyway. Elaine snores" she grabbed one of the pillows and hugged it too her chest. "We've never done this before" she said.
"Done what?" Killy asked.
"Snuck into each others room in the middle of the night" she said grinning. "But we've done a lot of other things. Remember trying to run away together when we were nine?"
Killy nodded. "We made it to the coast and tried to sneak on to a ship, but the captain caught us and took us back to Ironstone" she laughed. "Do you remember why we did it?" She shook her head. "You read in a book how a girl left her home and traveled the world and had a lot of adventures with a boy who didn't speak her language"
"I don't remember" Fiona said. "I just remember getting caught and riding back to Ironstone on a miniature horse"
Killy smiled. "I don't suppose you remember bringing home wildcats we found in a cave when we were twelve"
"And uncle Barnabas had to carry them back" Fiona said. "I'm going to miss that"
"Miss what?" Killy asked.
"Our adventures" she said.
"Well" Killy said. "It looks like they haven't ended, after all you in my room in the middle of the night wearing nothing but an oversized shirt"
"They have to come to an end sometime" she said. "And it looks like that might be soon. Flint said Father's planning my Coming Of Ball"
Killy felt a sudden panic but calmed himself. "And how does that end our adventures?" He asked.
Fiona cut him a look. "I'm sure whatever Lord my Father plans to marry me too won't like it that I'm riding over every week to see you" she said. "I don't know if we can even be friends"
"They don't have to end" Killian said.
"How's that?" Fiona asked.
Killy shrugged. "If you married me, we'd only have more adventures" his heart was racing out of control when he said that. He searched Fiona's face to see what she thought.
She was silent a moment. "I guess that's always what everyone expected" she said. "Flint teases me about announcing our engagement all the time. But nobody ever asked us if we wanted it" she looked up at him. "Do you want that?"
"Yes" Killy nodded. "Do you?"
"I don't want to marry at all" Fiona said. "I don't know" she hugged the pillow tighter. "I suppose you're decent looking and half smart" Killy didn't laugh and she realized how serious he was. "I don't know Killy" she said finally. "I should go"
"Don't" Killy said grabbing her arm. She let go of the pillow and Killy released her.
"I need to sleep" she said. "But I want to try something before I go" she leaned forward towards him until her lips were just over his. She didn't have to do anything else, Killy put a hand behind her neck and pulled her the rest of the way kissing her hungrily.
Fiona pulled back to catch her breath and Killy tried to pull her back, but she pushed away. "Well?" Killy asked.
"Well you're not a bad kisser" she said. "Goodnight" she slipped off the bed and walked to the door.
"You know you can sleep here?" Killy said as she opened the door.
"Goodnight" she said again, then walked out and closed the door. Killy couldn't get back to sleep for several hours worrying that he'd dream it all.
