Chapter I – Touchdown
Stefan mumbled to himself as he slapped a sign on the wooden gate in front of him. "I'm OK, I'm so ready for this..." Stefan was about to go through his hardest trial in life yet, it was the day of his "party" for getting his PhD. Not only did he have to endure a totally embarrassing graduation party after graduating high school, now he had to go through it again after dragging himself through grad school. Hey everybody, Stefan thought I just worked my hands to the bone for a piece of paper I'm not even sure I wanted in the first place! Stefan was unsure that he liked what he was doing, he majored in psychology. It took him eight years, but he could finally research the human brain, he was always fascinated by the human mind and wished to help cure many diseases that destroyed it. Stefan felt like he can help people in a different way and really make an immediate difference instead of waiting for a breakthrough that may never come. He didn't know why, but he felt as if he should be doing something greater. Before he started getting all philosophical, his mother called him from the house.
"Honey the guests will be here any minute, get in here and help me finish preparing!" He may have thought his mom may have had an annoying voice, but she was very kind. He sighed, Stefan didn't want this party, but he knew it would make his family happy. He had always been fairly close to his family, it's one of the few things he thought were truly invaluable in this world. His mother and father are still together and his grandfather lives with them since his grandmother died, they call him Gramps. Stefan wasn't really a people person, the only person he ever really identified with was his best friend Jason, he was the only person who really understood him. Stefan could feel his mother's next shout already ringing in his ears, so he quickened his pace towards the front door. No matter how old you are you never escape the nagging mother it seems... After a few last preparations the guests started to arrive. Stefan felt like the party was more of a popularity statement on his parents' part than an actual celebration for him. The first guest to arrive was Jason, he nonchalantly entered as he felt at home in Stefan's house and more specifically the backyard. They grew up in Stefan's backyard playing games pretending they were super heroes, yeah the kids who grew up to be a psychologist and a computer programmer. Jason said hello to Stefan's family and made his way outside, where Stefan was waiting for him. They had several benches set up in the backyard, Stefan waited for him to make his way over to where he had taken a seat.
Jason plopped himself next to him and started talking, "Hey Stef, this party is already crappy and no one is even here to feel it's crappiness yet."
Stefan chuckled a bit and responded "I don't think it can be crappy when it's not even a party yet."
Jason contemplated this and retorted, "Yeah, but then what do you all these decorations, it's like an empty party."
"So the party is the place not the people?"
"I guess it is man, whatever, you know what I mean! This is even worse than that graduation party your parents threw for you after senior year."
Stefan snickered a bit, "I didn't think anything could be worse than that monstrosity. Remember the pony?"
