You’d found out you were pregnant 6 months ago. It was a shock, but you were thrilled. You’d told Kevin the day after you found out, and he was ecstatic to say the least. He’d just begun to drop hints about a baby–trying convince you. And as it turns out, you got lucky the first time around.
Now you were on your way to your 6 months appointment. It’d taken some effort, but you’d convinced Kevin there was no need to come. It was just a routine check up. He was reluctant, but he had a busy day planned out and you didn’t want to burden him with another commitment.
As you sat in the waiting room, you rubbed your belly. He hadn’t been kicking at all lately. It was strange considering he had been so active before.
They called you into the doctor’s office and you sat, quietly flipping through yet another maternity magazine. There was really only so much to read about growing a kid and you were getting bored of all the pamphlets and websites everyone had been referring you to.
It had been 15 minutes and the doctor still hadn’t arrived. But, just as you stood to complain, the door swung open quickly and she flew inside, a ball of smiles as usual.
“Y/N! How are you feeling?” she said in the peppiest voice you’d ever heard.
“I’m good!” you smiled, slightly taken aback with her cheerfulness.
“Good to hear!” she placed a clipboard in her lap, “Any pain or cramping?”
“Here and there. I had a pretty rough bout of it last week but otherwise, I’m good.”
“What about spotting?”
“Yeah I’ve had some. But I’ve read that’s normal. It is, right?”
“Absolutely,” she said, “Your sex drive?”
“Through the roof!” you laughed. Things had definitely been better than good in bed lately.
“I would’ve guessed. The extra hormones can really do wonders to boost it,” she replied, all business, “Now, how about we get down to it and take a look?”
“Great,” you smiled, excited to see your little boy.
It didn’t take long for her to set up the machine, smoothing the jelly over your belly. As she pressed into her stomach, you watched as she furrowed her eyebrows.
“What’s going on in there?” you asked nervously.
“I’m having difficulty finding his heartbeat,” her mouth was set in a thin line.
“What?” you started to get nervous.
She searched a little longer before pulling away. “Y/N…you might want to call your husband, tell him to come in.”
“What? What’s wrong?” you started to panic.
“Just…why don’t you give him a call and I’ll stop back by once he gets here.”
You felt your stomach drop as you grabbed your phone. She left as you dialed.
“Kev?”
“Yeah, princess?”
“Can…can you come to the doctor’s after all?”
He could sense something was wrong, “Of course, love. I’ll be right over.”
It didn’t take too long for him to find his way over. He came through the door, sitting by your bed, “What’s going on, Y/N?” he rubbed your leg.
“I don’t know. She wouldn’t say,” your mouth was set in a steady frown.
The doctor came in just a moment later, “Ah, Mr. Love. Nice to see you again,” she stuck out her hand for a shake. He took it.
“What’s the problem?” he leaned forward from his seat, cracking his knuckles, a nervous habit.
“Well. I’m terribly sorry to have to tell you this, I knew you were both so excited for this baby. But it seems that there is no heartbeat. You’ve miscarried, Y/N.”
You had guessed the moment she’d asked you to call Kevin, but you couldn’t believe it, “I just…are you sure? I can feel him. He’s in there. He’s alive.”
“I’m sorry, Y/N,” was all she could say.
“No. No! He’s in there. He’s okay,” you moved your hand to your stomach. You were yelling now.
“Y/N…” Kevin whispered.
“No, Kevin! This is bullshit–”
“Y/N. Just, it’s okay. It’ll be okay.”
And that’s when you really realized. Your baby was gone. You would never see his tiny face or rock him to sleep. You would never be his mother.
“Kevin…” you sobbed.
