Elsa was in the conference room with stacks and stacks of paper that seemed to have no end. Each one required her signature to be worth anything or have any effect. She took her hand, placed it on her shoulder and began to rub hard, trying to relieve some off her stress. She stood, trying to realise pressure on her spine. She pinched her pressure points to help her head ache. Closing her eyes she paused and heaved a sigh.
The grand doors at the entrance swung open and she paid them no mind. Anna stumbled in with another stack of papers. Even at the end of the table it was hard to find a place for them.
"Just set them on top of another stack," Elsa began without stopping her work. "I'll sort through them later."
Anna scanned the table and found a stack paper-clipped together. She set the loose papers on top with a shaky smile. She looked over at her sister, deep in concentration.
"Sis... the only time you come out of this room is when you need to bathe, eat, or sleep. It's freezing in here." She glanced over at the roaring fire and concern boiled deep in her heart. "Let me see your fingers."
Elsa didn't respond and kept her head clouded with work. Anna strutted over to where her sister sat, getting colder with every step. She grabbed Elsa's wrist and speed her fingers wide like a maple leaf. Anna quick key let go because her finger tips were covered in frost and were as cold as ice. Elsa turned her head when Anna tried to look her in the eyes. Partly in shame, partly in denial.
"Elsa... you need to-"
"What I need, Anna," she was taken aback by her sister's harsh voice, "is to finish all these!" She gestured to the mountains of paper.
"I'm just saying I think it would be good for you."
"And I'm just saying-" she was cut off with a thud from the window. The maroon, satin curtains muffled the sound but it still ricocheted through out the magnificent room.
"What was that?" Elsa muttered, practically to herself.
"Hm? Oh, uh, probably just a bird, or...... something." Anna finished with a bright smile.
Elsa raises her eyebrows in question.
"On the first floor? Honestly, Anna, do you think I'm daft?"
Anna lowered her head. She began to fiddle with her dress. She hesitated before speaking.
"The uh... The protests are... are still in action."
Elsa hung her head in shame. She knew what Anna meant. The protest against her reign. When she fled her kingdom the night of her coronation. They questioned whether she is still a suitable queen because queens don't just pick up and leave their kingdoms in tragedy.
They tough it out. They don't let anyone know how they feel on the inside. But that's exactly what Elsa failed to do. She hated herself for it. That's why she stayed glued to her duties. She never wanted to abandon them ever again.
