Alice Annesley didn't really know what love was. Her father had died when she was just a baby during the first wizarding war, leaving her depressed grieving mother to raise her. Alice's mother never remarried, she never dated or went out with anyone else, the thought of being with anyone besides her departed soulmate sent ripples of disgust and pain throughout her body and soul.
Now Alice had seen couples walking down the length of the street embraced in one another's arms, their fingers laced tightly. She had heard her mother speak passionately about her father, and she had read silly muggle fairy tales about the princess and prince who fell deeply in love after a single glance.
She just wasn't sure how it all worked exactly.
Her mother had told her not to fret about it, that she would know when she knew. What did that even mean? How? How are you supposed to know if the one is really the one? It seemed like a large ordeal that you couldn't just decide on a whim or a single glance, Alice was terribly worried and completely confused. Granted, she was still but a child worrying over the smallest things that she had no power over, yet that had always been how the blonde girl was.
She couldn't help it, she was just afraid. What if she met the one, but didn't think he was it and let him go forever. What if she ended up alone. What if she never found anyone. Heavy stuff for a child who should be running amuck in the yard with her friends. She should be worrying about playing games under the summer sky and scraped knees from roughhousing not having an existential crisis over her soul mate that she thought she would never find.
Her friends didn't understand her worry, they tried to reassure her time and time again that she would find whoever it was that she wanted to find. But she knew it was going to be harder than that, she would have to search and search because a single look in the eye just wasn't going to cut it.
How wrong she had been.
Alice would never categorize what happened on the train to Hogwarts in her first year as 'love at first sight' she would, however, call it 'interest at first sight'. She was only 11 years old and wasn't looking for someone go steady with but she had found a good friend in the red-headed boy who always brought her snacks and made her laugh at his silly jokes. And as the years drew by that friendship dawdled into something more for the blonde girl and soon enough she wasn't able to detach her baby blue eyes from the boy with the fire red hair.
Little did she know that his eyes were equally set upon her, yet every time his gaze caught hers she would look away, a blush gracing her cheeks. She would never know that he did so on purpose, an attempt to catch her gaze, and he would never know that she had already been gazing at him with stars in her eyes.
