I work the morning shift at American Eagle in the mall and I truly despise it. It's horrible, for the most part.
One day not that long ago, Dylan came and surprised me at work. I was helping a customer get a sweater she wanted in an XL size, so once I found it, I gave it to her rang her up at the cash register. The next customer was Dylan, and he really didn't have anything to buy, just to take.
"Hey Ver." He says with that dashing smile. I always admired his smile, but that's the only thing I really admired about him.
"Hey Dylan, what are the odds of seeing you here?" I say jokingly since I told him I worked here at our last get together.
He laughs using that dashing smile again and responds, "Actually, I was thinking if you could take off some time at work to get a bite to eat with me at the IHOP in the mall?"
This time, it's my turn to laugh. "Dylan, I can't just leave work like this." I look around and see that there really isn't anyone here anyway.
"Aw, c'mon. When's the last time you played hooky?" He leans against the counter as I look straight into his mysterious blue eyes pondering if I should actually do this.
"Well, I guess I can take a twenty minute break." I say smiling not feeling this good about playing hooky since high school.
"Great! Let's go." He starts to walk away heading for the exit. I hop over the counter and jog to catch up with him.
"So what makes you want to see me again? We say each other a few days ago?" I walk beside Dylan trying to keep up with him since he has a long stride.
"No particular reason," Dylan explains,"just wanted to give you a break from work. I know Cameron would want to if he could, but he's doing things right now I'm guessing." I nod knowing he is pretty busy right now with photo shoots and such. Just normal model things, that's all.
I reply. "I guess he would," realizing something then continuing, "This the first time you've mentioned Cameron."
His face turns to a pained expression. "Cameron Alexander Dallas. He's...something."
"Why'd you say his full—"
"Oh look we're here!" Dylan says going up to the IHOP like he's never seen one before.
I sigh following him in as a waitress brings us to a table.
She places the menus on the table and says to us, "Here's your table. Gerald, your server, will be with you in a moment."
Once she leaves, Dylan turns into what I like to call, "Brooding Teenager Mode".
He'll just have this annoyed look on his face, go on his phone, and not pay attention to me at all even when I try to get him to talk to me."So, how've you been? I haven't seen you in a while." I smile trying to get to talk.
"Fine, I guess." He puts his phone down and becomes regular Dylan again. He continues, "Man, I'm really happy that you almost forgot your keys that day. You're like, my best friend. We're besties, right?"
"Good friends is what I'd call it. We've only seen each other like a few times since we've first met."
He rolls his eyes.
And I've had enough.
"Ok, Dylan, I don't know what's up with you. You're like a child. You don't talk to me and you always go into this weird silent mode. Then you turn all happy. And not a second later, you roll your eyes at me! I feel really disrespected when you do that." I stand up and a few people glance at me. I don't really notice their stares as I look at you.
"It's probably because of you're boyfriend who doesn't really love you! Everything's a dare with him, can't you tell?" He storms out of the restaurant and I huff. I sit down rubbing my temples so unsure of why he's so touchy, and how he knows about Cameron's obsession with dares.
"Coffee?" I see a waiter holding a coffee pot come up to me with a nameplate that says, 'Gerald'.
"Sure." I sigh putting the mug at the edge of the table so he could fill it easier.
This was going to be longer than a twenty minute break.
