*****************************Chapter One***********************************************************************
"That's it Vanessa! Yes, just like that! Your double loop is looking great!" My coach, Stefanie yells from the opposite side of the rink. My solo music ends, and I skate over to her. "Okay, I think you've got this competition in the bag. One thing you need to work on though; timing, timimg, timing. You're going too fast, slow down. Your elements, especially the double loop, are looking good." I nod, my first national competition is tomorrow and I need to be perfect if I have any hope of advancing. I stay and practice for another few minutes until my feet go numb with cold and I am forced to leave the rink.
In the parking lot, I shiver waiting for my ride. Eventually, my mother pulls up in her blue minivan. Exhausted, I hop into the front seat only to hear a squeal from the back.
"Surprise!" my best friend and twin sister Sabina yells. I return the squeal and jump into the seat next to her. For the ten minute drive we gab about anything we can think of. I look at Sabrina, laughing and smiling. Seeing her like this reminds me of how thankful I am to have a sister like her. Someone who I can talk to about serious things and goof around with in happy times. She can always judge how i'm feeling without me saying anything and I know that no matter how far we are, I'll always feel her with me, like a taut cord tethering us together.
"Ness, are you even listening to me?" she says, staring at me inquisitively.
"Yes?" oops, I didn't mean for the word to come out as a question.
"No you aren't" Sabrina says whilst smacking me playfully.
Before I have a chance to respond, we are in the drive way.
"Race you inside!" Sabrina yells, jumping out of the car. I scream, chasing her into the house. As I run through the doorway, I'm stopped by a pair of strong arms holding me back.
"Heya little sis."
"Alex! Let me go!" I whine. He obeys and I scowl up at him.
"What's got you in a rush anyways?"
"I was racing Sabrina but I got stopped by a massive buffoon."
"Hey now, no name calling." He says playfully. I barely hear him, I'm already half way up the stairs.
I open the door to the room I share with Sabrina, only to find her already passed out on the bed. How she gets to sleep so fast, I have no clue. Sighing I lie down on my bed and before I know it, I'm asleep too.
I wake up to the sound of Sabrina's alarm. From across the room she throws a pillow at me.
"What time is it?" I ask groggily
"4:30 am"
I gasp, realizing that I probably won't have enough time to get ready. I shower quickly before throwing on my sweatpants and figure skating club jacket, tossing my costume, hair and makeup bins into a separate bag.
"Sabrina! Vanessa! Come downstairs! We need to be at the airport in 20 minutes!" My mom yells.
When I step onto the plane, everything becomes more real. Finally it kicks in that I'm on my way across the country to compete in a national figure skating competition. I'm a bundle of nerves and excitement. When we arrive, my dad takes pictures of the rink while Stefanie gives me a quick pep talk. Then... I'm on the ice. Waiting to begin, I take in the sight. The stands hold hundreds of people, all looking at me expectantly. I try to avoid their eyes. My music starts. It's just me and the ice. No one else is there, no one is watching. My nerves melt away and all I can feel is my feet gliding over the ice, the cold air whipping against my face as it threatens to take my hair out of its bun. Going into the double loop, I'm confident, not nervous at all. I take off, and something feels wrong.
All of a sudden, my nerves snap back to life. The rush of falling overwhelms me, surrounding me. Me, falling through what seems like endless air. My body, spiraling out of control. The impact, my head hitting first with a devastating crack. The pain in my skull. And then, the black.
