Prologue

The hot summer air pierced my skin as I opened my window. My music played beside me, on my small night stand. If only my friends could be here right now..

I thought quietly.

"Jess!" my mom hollered over my music. I rolled my eyes as I opened my door. I took one step out to make sure my brother was no where in sight. When I thought there was no sure sign of him, I scurried down the stairs to my ever-so-patient mother.

"Yeah?" I asked, taking in the cool air from the air conditioner. "Can you run some errands for me? I need you to go to the store, pay a few bills, and stuff like that," she said as she pulled out the longest errand list imaginable.

I sucked it up and gave in as she gave me her please-do-it-for-me smile. I gave a whole-hearted smile as I gave in to her demands.

I headed out the door with my purse in one hand and my keys in the other.

I've always been the strange child. My brother achieved everything he set his mind to while I wasn't even close. He's the child who will be successful while I'm the child who stands in his shadow, not bright enough to make a light of my own.

My brother is going to be a senior when school starts back while I'm one year behind him, as a junior. I'm not popular like he is. I'm definitely not outgoing. I'm the shy girl in the back with only a few people to call her friends.

My music taste is what some people would call weird. Japanese music is the only kind for me. It's my life! I find comfort in the emotions portrayed in each song.

My family knows this. But it's not like they care right?

Shaken from my thoughts, I stopped the car at a red light, in a four way intersection.

As I waited impatiently, my favorite song came on. I smiled ever so slightly and began to sing the lyrics. My head moved here and there, but I was having fun even though it was just music.

When I glanced over, there was a boy driving the car next to me. His fluffy and straight brown locks hung down in his face, but not down so low that you couldn't see his eyes.

His eyes.... They were a piercingly beautiful electric blue. They stared directly into my eyes, and I found myself in a trance.

I came back to reality and blushed furiously as I realized he had been watching me sing. I prayed that the light would turn, and when it did, I stepped on the pedal, hoping to get far away and hide my embarassment.

This is gonna be a weird summer, I just know it.
