It's pouring outside. I'm driving. Gerrard's in the passenger seat next to me. "Well, you can't take him home, Cat. I know. I know. I'll have to turn him in. Poor kid will be crushed, but what choice do I have,"  I let out a sad sigh. "What's wrong?" Gerrard asked. "Nothing," I replied in a tired tone. "Are you my new mom?" he questioned. I looked at him with shock, "What! I, uh, it doesn't work that way! Just call me Cat.". I started feeling incredibly awkward around this kid. "Ok, Miss. Cat!" he said cheerfully then frowned, "Um, Miss. Cat. Where are we?". "It's a place that's going to help you Gerrard. We're at the Department of Social Services."

The car was quiet for a minute, then there was screaming. "No! No! No! I don't want to go! I don't want to go!" Gerrard tried to open the door. I locked it, "Jeez kid. Chill. These people are going to help you not hurt you. Maybe they can help you find your parents.". Gerrard stopped screaming and kicking and his face brightened up, "You really thinks so?".  I put on a confident but fake smile, "Of course, kid. These guys know what there doing.". Gerrard looked ahead in his seat, "Alright then. Let's go!".

"Your such a liar, Cat. Am not. Maybe they can. Probably not going to give the kid back if his parents abandoned him. Well, that's maybe true, but what if...um...well...there's no hope for this kid. But there not going to let me take him in. I'm a complete stranger. Not related to him at all. True, "  I argued in my head.

I park the car and Gerrard followed me up the sidewalk. When we had only took about five steps from my car, there was sudden squeal from Gerrard, "Mom! Dad!". He ran over to pair of miserable looking people. "Hey, kiddo!" the apparent father said excitedly picking up Gerrard. The mother snapped, "Don't you "Hey, kiddo" him. He's in a lot of trouble for running away.". The father's face darkened, "Well, he probably ran off because you went out and partied for three days instead of watching him while I was out on a business trip! You were supposed to watch him, Cindy! He probably thought we weren't coming back!". The father set poor confused Gerrard on the ground and started arguing with his girlfriend. I didn't see ring on either finger, so I could only assume they weren't married.

I walked over to the corrupt family. "Ahem," the two parents stopped arguing and looked at me, "Um, hi. I'm Cat. I'm the one who brought your son here.". I have never felt so awkward in my life. I don't even know why I walked over here. I just felt like I needed to do something. "You did?" the father asked and I nodded in reply. "Well then, you have my thanks. At least somebody around here is actually responsible.". He looked over at Cindy who was fuming, "Well, it's not my fault that I as a mother need a break from time to time! You have no idea how hard it is with you away all the time! I never even wanted this little brat in the first place! I hate kids, Jasper! He was just an exception! But I'm sick of it! I don't want all this responsibility anymore! I can't take it!".

The father, apparently trying not let out his anger in a violent way, balled up his fist at his sides, and yelled, "Well, if you can't take anymore and I'm never around then we're not supposed to be parents! I've thinking that for a long time! Which is why I think it's time we gave him up!".  Gerrard looked scared, and confused. Tears started falling down his face, "But where am I going to go?". Jasper got down to Gerrard's level, "There's always your grandfather's.". "I don't want to go there.". "Your Aunt Lee's.". "No.". "Well, then where you gonna go kid. We can't keep you.". I raised my hand and said without thinking, "I'll take him.".
