In the sitting room hangs a large portrait depicting a young seventeenth-century french woman in a red gown as she stared out to a vast field of flowers through a window. When I later viewed this painting again the following evening, the field had become a sea of blood while the woman gazed at it with wide eyes and displaying a wicked smile.
