She just wanted to get away from in all for a little bit. Don't get her wrong, touring was everything Lilyanne had dreamed up since she was a little girl touring with her father's band but Lilyanne knew her limits.
As much as she loved the band and crew, she had to get away. Being alone while on the road was pretty much impossible and she and the girls from Black Diamond had been touring non-stop for years.
Sure they had gone from shitty vans and hauling their own gear to roadies and tour buses but it was still the same. She needed a little space to process being in the spotlight.
Plus, it was when she did her best writing.
So Lilyanne had escaped Reykajvik, Iceland on her day off to go on a self-guided tour of the south coast. She'd have to be back by tomorrow night for their show but for now, she had her GPS and the open road.
Pulling her rental car into the Glacier Lagoon, 8 hours later, Lilyanne was exhausted. So far she had seen waterfalls, glaciers, a plane in a field where Justin Bieber once filmed a music video and black sand beaches.
This was her last stop before retiring to a small hotel nearby. Glacier Lagoon had been created in the 1940's when the glacier started to melt and retreat, leaving a huge pool of freshwater in its wake. Now, tourists can watch icebergs chunks melt and float out to the Atlantic ocean while seals play and hunt among the bergs.
Getting out of her car, Lilyanne grabbed her backpack and water bottle before setting out to explore the area.
She walked towards the shoreline mesmerized by the blueness of the water and the freshness of the air. She snapped a few pictures of the icebergs and some seals playing in the distance.
She walked along the beach away from the tourists, campers and groups to try and find some solitude to write.
Lilyanne climbed a small hill that overlooked the lagoon. Finding a rock, she plopped her backpack on the ground and perched herself on the edge. She took a few deep breaths and allowed the creativity to start flowing through her.
Once she could start hearing the lyrics, she grabbed her notebook and started recording. It was her usual fare -- brokenhearted woman done wrong by her cheating scum of a man.
It wasn't half bad but also more of the same. She wanted to come up with something spectacular for their new album.
Lilyanne heard grass crunching over her shoulder and she turned to watch a man approach. He was tall, wearing aviators and a hat. Lilyanne rolled her eyes in annoyance that someone would dare encroach on her space while she was writing. Didn't he see that she was busy creating up here?
"I like your idea." a deep-barontoned Dutch accent spoke at her.
Lilyanne turned to see the man pulling out a journal of his own from his pocket and waving at her. She smiled at him.
"It's so lovely up here, I thought I could get a few minutes of solitude to record my thoughts."
"Eer, right." The Dutch responded. "Well, I don't want to bother you but I saw you up here and thought how cool you looked with the lagoon and the mountains in the background. I snapped some pictures that have you writing with the scenery and I thought I would see if you wanted them?"
Lilyanne's heart melted. That was really cool of him. She smiled, "Sure, let's take a look. Do you want to sit?"
She made some room on the rock so the 6'0" hottie could put himself next to her.
He pulled out his iPhone and started swiping through pictures. "Here" he said pointing to a richly colored portrait, "this is you. I just thought the sky, the water, and the glacier all framed the hill you were sitting on nicely."
Lilyanne pushed her sunglasses onto her head so she could take a closer look at the picture. "Yeah, these are really cool. Thanks for taking them."
"It's no problem. I was inspired and I always wish that if I were surrounded by a cool looking vista, someone would do the same for me."
"Most definitely. You have an eye for photography. What are you doing in Iceland?" She asked.
"I'm here on vacation. I've spent the last 19 days traveling around the country in my rental car just seeing where the drive takes me. I've been stopping at every waterfall and hot spring I can find."
"That sounds really lovely."
"How long are you in Iceland for?" He asked her.
"Just the next two nights."
"Are you traveling alone?"
"Ah, no. I'm here with my girlfriends." Lilyanne didn't know why she didn't tell him that she was touring with her band. She found it nice that he had no idea who she was. It was a good break from the screaming fans every night.
"That sounds fun. Ok, let me get you these pictures so I can let you finish your writing. I truly didn't mean to interrupt you."
"That's okay. I'm glad you did. It's nice to meet someone outside of my girlfriends. I love them and we're close but we spend a lot of time together."
He grunted in agreement, while reaching for her phone. She unlocked it for him and watched him become friends on Instagram and direct message the pictures.
"There you have it. And now, we're Instagram friends." He smiled at her rubbing his ginger stubble. He was sweet, charming and pretty hot. "I'll let you get back at it. Happy writing!"
"Nice to meet you...and thanks!"
He rose to leave and Lilyanne pulled her notebook back out of her backpack. It was such a simple encounter but it had warmed Lilyanne's heart. It had been so long since she had an encounter with a man who hadn't wanted anything from her.
Her last boyfriend had taken and taken from her. Not only did she pay all of their bills while he struggled to "find himself" but he constantly had needed her emotional support. He was insecure with his work and his drive. The final nail in the coffin, besides the cheating, was that he couldn't handle her success. Which had lead to the cheating... or so he said.
And then there were the agents and music industry people and record producers, who all wanted a piece of her. She loved her life but it was exhausting. When did she get something in return? Especially in love.
This man, however simple his gesture, had reminded her that people could be good and kind. She smiled and for the first time in a long time, she wrote a happy song.
