The next day I went out to this store I found called Top Shop and bought this cute floral print dress and some black flats to match. Usually I went for tennis shoes and sweats, because that's all I brought to London, but this dress was cute, and I was two sizes smaller than my usual ten in it, which I liked. After I bought my dress I stopped into the coffee shop and stole their wifi and charged my phone, but didn't buy anything because I was having a proper dinner tonight. I went to the rec center and had a shower and by then it was four o'clock so I figured I could go and figure out where Jason's house was. I didn't know where we would go to eat and I didn't even know if he would want to talk to me because I keep rejecting him, but I had to try anyway. I really didn't want to lose him. He was my only friend in London and I was pushing him away. So I hoped to God this plan would work and started walking in the direction I saw Jason disappeared to every time he left the park.
I knocked on the door of a huge mansion in the neighborhood I figured they lived. I knew they lived in a big house but when I knocked and Patty answered I was still surprised they could afford it. Patty asked me what I wanted and as I was too busy fangirling to form complete, coherent phrases. I think Patty understood that I didn't want him though and he left to get Jason. Jason came out and was speechless.
After a while of awkwardly staring at each other he said, "I love your dress. I didn't know you owned one."
“I didn’t until today,” I whispered. “Anyways I’m here to ask you to have dinner with me,” I asked with a little more confidence. “So would you, like I said, go out with me?”
Jason’s face fluttered between a bunch of different emotions before settling on happy as he responded, “Yeah sure, I’d love to. Give me time to get ready. I’m sure Patty wants to get to know you anyways.”
He led me through their house to the kitchen where Patty was, and then disappeared up a flight of stairs. I sat on a stool next to Patty and he seemed uncomfortable at first but loosened up after a while. He started off with the general get to know you questions, hobbies and hometown and the likes, and then it got more about my relationship with Jason. It was kind of awkward because I was trying to just survive through the coming winter, and I never thought of Jason as anything really, so I didn’t have any answers for Patty about what was happening between us. He was just my friend and I was his.
30 minutes later, Jason comes pounding down the stairs and called my name saying he was ready. I turned out to leave Patty in the kitchen, but before I could, Patty grabbed my arm and said, “You mean a lot to Jason. Don’t talk to him about your situation. Don’t fight with him. And don’t fuck this up, Sam. I know you’re strong and independent, but if you and Jason fight again about moving in again, I don’t know how well he will handle it this time. I would love it if you moved in, by the way. Now get out of here and have fun.”
We got in Jason’s car and I started to zone out. Jason was talking and I was thinking about him and what Patty said. Oh shit! Jason is talking: “Earth to SAMMMMM!!!!!!”
“Oh yeah, sorry Jason. What were you saying?”
“I was asking you where you wanted to eat.”
“I don’t know. You’re the one that lives here. You can pick.”
We drove some more. Jason stopped and parked and then we went inside this place. I didn’t even bother to look at the sign because I trusted Jason and I’d never been there before so it didn’t really matter if I remembered it.
We got a table and started to order. I just got soup and a salad. It wasn’t much but it would be more than I had in a while. I wasn’t paying much attention to Jason, and I know that isn’t polite but he wasn’t talking and I couldn’t stop thinking about what Patty had said to me about how he would like me to move in. Finally, I broke the awkward silence, by bringing up the topic Patty specifically told me to avoid. I never planned on bringing it up completely, I just wanted to get some questions answered.
“Jason, have you talked to Patty about me?”
“Uhh, yeah. Why?”
“Well, I don’t know. I just was curious as to how much Patty knows about me.”
He kind of got nervous and stared blushing about this point. I was almost too caught up staring into his beautifully gray tinted eyes to notice. He nervously chuckled before responding, “I mean, I don’t know. I have seen you almost every day for over two months now, so it all depends on how well he listens when I talk.”
“So you have talked about me more than once?” I asked with a smirk.
“Of course. You are, sort of, a big part of my life,” he said so quietly it was almost a whisper.
“And so then Patty probably advised you to avoid the conversation about me moving in?” I questioned.
“Yeah he did,” Jason answered almost cautiously, then he stopped to think and got mad, “And I think it’s smart! There is no point in arguing because both of us have already made their decisions so we should just enjoy our meal and not talk about it!”
“That’s where I think you are wrong. I’m not sure I made the right decision anymore,” I trailed off because I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t want to invite myself into their home, but being homeless was really tiring. It didn’t matter because as soon as Jason he had the chance he was up, shouting and dancing around. Apparently that was close enough to a yes for him. Me being my paranoid self had to make sure he was completely 100% ok with it; as if that reaction wasn’t enough. “Jason are you sure? I don’t want to be a burden”
That made him stop dancing pretty quickly and sit back down. “Sam,” he said, taking my hands into his, “I won’t ever want you to leave. You were probably more of a burden when you didn’t live with us anyway, because I had to plan when to talk to you. This way I can just come pounding into your room whenever I want. And we can hang out every day and inside at that. We need to get you a phone too. We should go do that now. I want to be your first contact, and then you can meet all of my friends.”
At this point I interrupted him, “maybe we should just start with a bed.”
He looked at me and I looked at him. Both of us just admiring each other, until he cupped my face with his hands and drew me towards him. Then, we were kissing. It was beautiful. My first kiss was amazing and soft and reassuring; everything I needed him to say in that moment was said during the couple seconds we kissed.
