'Look, there he is.' Emily pokes my elbow and I almost drop my books. 'Don't point at him.' I poke her back, but she's just looking at the end of the hall. 'And don't look like that either!' I tell her quietly. I can't blame her though. At the end of the hall is a group of boys standing. Not that that's special, but after I told Emily about Louis ''rescuing'' me she can't stop looking for him.
'Go talk to him.' she pushes me a little bit towards the boys. 'What no, stop it.' I grab her wrist and look back nervously. I see Louis looking at me. 'Thanks, now he saw me.' I give Emily a hard stare. She just shrugs, but then her eyes become big. 'W-what?' I turn my head around and make a little jump. 'Oh sorry, I didn't mean to scare you.' Right in front of me is standing the boy I can't stop thinking about. He smiles at me and looks a little nervous. 'Eh, that's alright. Dina had a dream about ghosts so she's a little scared today.' Emily falls in for me when I don't respond. 'Eh yeah. It's nothing really.' I give Emily a hard stare again. What a stupid excuse, now Louis probably thinks I'm crazy. 'I don't think we met.' He holds his hand out to Emily who shakes it grinning. 'I'm Emily.'
'Nice to meet you Emily. I'm Louis.' 'Yeah I know that.' She says with a wink. Louis raises an eyebrow. I quickly change the subject. 'Eh, did you want to ask me something or..?' He turns back to me. 'Oh Yes! I wanted to ask you if you're alright. After, ya know.' 'yes I'm ok.' I smile awkwardly. 'Thanks again.' 'You're welcome.' At that moment the bell of the next lesson rings. 'Oh, I need to go girls.' he waves at us and walks back to his friends. When he's around the corner Emily starts screaming. 'Omg! He's so cute.' I try to calm her down. 'You, my dear friend, have a good taste.' She winks at me as I roll my eyes. 'You shouldn't act like that around him. What if his girlfriend finds out? She'll kill you.' She scoffs, 'I don't care what that bitch thinks.'
I look at my watch. 'We should get to class.'
'Lady's, you are late.' My teacher turns his head when we try to walk in to our class without getting noticed. 'We're sorry Mister Anderson, we eh thought we had maths but,' I try. He signs, well I'll let you go for this time. Sit down quickly.' We almost run to our seats and sit down beside each other. Mr Anderson starts talking again.
'I don't even like biology.' Emily whispers from my left. I do not respond. I like biology, and Mr. Anderson one's one of my favourite teachers. That's also a reason why people don't like me. I get along with almost all the teachers here in school. It's not so hard, I mean it's not that they like me more. I'm just nice to them and I try to pay attention in their lessons. That's all you have to do. But around me people are looking out of the window, and on their phones.
The lesson passes quickly and after what only seems a few minutes the bell rings. I get up and walk to the door. 'Wait a minute Dina.' I turn around. 'I want to talk to you.' Mr Anderson looks very serious. I nod and wait for the other students to leave the classroom. What doe she want to talk about? I didn't do anything. What if...What if Louis or Emily told him about those boys..
'How are you?' He begins the conversation very normal. I shrug. 'I'm fine, I guess.'
'and how's school? I saw you have good grades for most of the subjects.' I nod still not sure where he's going. 'Sir, eh I need to go to my next lesson so if there's something you want to ask me..'
'Yes there is.' He sits down on his desk. 'I've been keeping an eye on this class lately. And I eh I have the feeling that you don't seem to feel comfortable around these students.' I looks at me questioning. 'Well eh I don't know.'
' f there's something wrong, you can always tell me. You know that right?' I nod looking around a little nervous. 'Sir, did they ever bully you. I mean when you were in school?' I ask him quietly. He sighs. 'The important thing is that you stand up for yourself.' He stands up and walk over to me, placing his hand on my shoulder. 'Don't let them get to you.' I nod, trying to avoid his glance.
'Alright. You should go to your next class. Tell your teacher it was my fault, if you're late.' I nod again, giving him a weak smile. 'Thank you sir.'
I sigh after closing the door. That was an awkward conversation.
The rest of the lessons I keep thinking of what Mr. Anderson said to me. How can I stand up for myself against those creepy guys. I walk into the canteen slowly, looking for Emily. She's probably sitting with her friends, I don't think they want me there. 'Dina! Over here.' Em waves to me from the back of the canteen. She's indeed sitting with her other friends. I walk over to them, smiling shyly. 'Do you want to sit with us?' She asks me. I nod and sit down beside her. 'Oh By the way. This are Sasha, Jade and Chloe. She points at the girls sitting on the table. One of the girls, Chloe, smiles at my kindly. 'Nice to meet you Dina, Em told us quite a lot about you.' I don't know what to say so I just smile. Em talks about me with them? What kind of things did she say?
The girls started a conversation, which I believe is about a soccer training against the boys. 'He Dina. You're a good keeper right?' Em pokes my arm. I shrug. 'Not really.' 'She is.' She turns to the other girls. 'Well then you can be our keeper today!' Sasha cheers. 'I don't know guys, I'm not that good.' Emily laughs. 'Do you think we are good at football? It's just for fun.' She gives me a wink. I sigh 'Alright, I'll do it.'
At the end of the day we meet on the soccer field behind our school. I feel a little uncomfortable in my shorts and top between all these other people. Ok, just do it and then go home, it's not a big deal. I try to focus on my team instead of other people. Who are watching us and walking around on the field and tribune.
'Ok girls. The boys are coming in a few minutes. It's just a practice, Dina.' She sees the nervous look on my face. 'Jessica will be back next week, then she can be our keeper.' I nod.
Behind me I hear people jelling and laughing. I turn around and see the boys running towards the field. When I see the familiar boy I turn back to Em. 'Why didn't you tell Louis was playing with the boys?'I whisper angrily.
'So our little slut is playing too?' I turn around shocked. Daniel is standing a few meters away from me. 'Try to keep your legs closed hunny.' He winks at me. I look at the ground, embarrassed. Why did Emily put me in this team? 'Shut up, idiot.' Sasha stands in front of me.
'How is your dad doing, Dina?' He doesn't listen to Sasha and goes on.
How does he..
'It's ok Sasha. I- I think I don't feel well. I'm sorry.' I run away with tears in my eyes.
I need to get away from this place. I run around the back of the school to the toilets. I lean on the sink and look at my teary eyes in the mirror. Why did he ask about my dad? Nobody ever does..
Images are flashing through my mind. My dad... I miss him so much, but I never had the strength to talk about it with someone.
'Dina, are you alright?' I quickly wipe away the turns and look up with a crooked smile. 'Yes, I'm fine. I just have a headache, that's all.' Emily looks at me concerned. 'I know you don't want to talk about your..dad, but maybe it would help if you did it.' She leans against the sink beside me. I don't answer, she sighs. 'Are you going home?' I nod and walk away from the mirrors. 'Ok, I guess I'll see you tomorrow.' She stands up. I try to give her a real smile before walking away, but I have the feeling I failed completely according to her expression. 'Bye, Em.'
I'm not home tonight, there's pizza in the fridge
I throw the note in the kitchen away. Good, no drama tonight. Just an evening with my brother. I look in the fridge, oh that's actually surprising: the pizza really is there.
