Chapter Fourteen

Myles was stunned into complete stillness, not moving an inch.

Once Sarah pulled away, they were both breathing heavily, and Myles couldn’t help but stare at her in shock, and, for a moment she was staring at him before realization slowly crossed her face and she backed away from him.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that,” She muttered, her cheeks flushing even more than they already were. “I’m really sorry.”

“Uh, it’s okay, I just… don’t understand…”

“Neither do I, really.” She replied, rubbing the back of her neck in an uncomfortable way.

“…why?” Myles couldn’t help but question it, and Sarah grimaced, shaking her head lightly and taking a deep breath.

“I honestly don’t know myself, but, I know I feel some sort of attraction towards you,” She admitted, and Myles blinked, tilting his head in a slightly perplexed way. “I know you don’t feel the same, Myles, at least… not to me.”

Myles blinked, her last words not making sense to him in the slightest.

“What do you mean by that?” He questioned, bewildered, and Sarah gave him a look, her eyes a mix of emotions as Myles were sure his were as well.

“You love her, don’t you?”

He froze, automatically looking away from Sarah, doing his best to avoid her gaze as he realized that she had figured out what he only had that morning.

She sighed sadly.

“I knew it, but, I shouldn’t be disappointed, but, Myles,” Hearing his name, Myles raised his head. “I hope you know what you should do, I hope you know what’s best, and you’re not going to become involved with her, are you? I mean, not while knowing what will happen.”

Myles hesitated, and he found Sarah’s glittering blue hues boring into his intently, eagerly awaiting the answer to her question.

Eventually, he nodded.

“No, of course not,” He swallowed. “I won’t get involved with her, I know what’s going to happen, and, after all, I’m a part of it, I’ll help bring her down.”

Sarah smiled lightly, before she hugged him tightly.

“I’m glad to hear that.”

“Yeah… you know, I always thought you sort of hated me.” Myles admitted, and Sarah laughed, pulling back and grinning up at him.

“Oh, I do. Well, I don’t hate you, but, I don’t particularly like you.” She explained, and Myles frowned in confusion.

“What do you mean? You just-“

“What? I can’t be attracted to someone I hate? I mean, you’re supposed to hate The Lady of The Masks, and, look how that turned out.”

“Point taken,” Myles nodded, before a knock sounded on the door that his back was still pressed up against, causing him to jump. “Who is it?”

“It’s David, Detective Johnson wants to know if you two are done yet, he wants to go over a list of possible suspects that he’s narrowed down.”

Myles’ heart skipped a beat.

Possible suspects?

Could they possibly know who The Lady of The Masks really was?

Would Myles know it was her if he saw her?

“Yeah, w-we’ll be out right away.” Myles called back, and once he heard David leave down the hall, he sighed, running his hand down his face, trying to clear his head.
